Job summary

The States of Guernsey is looking to recruit a Staff Nurse to join St John's Residential Care Home.The role of the Staff Nurse is to co-ordinate the management of the Ward in the absence of another Registered Nurse and will have responsibility for ensuring that best practice is adopted to maintain high standard of care. Assisting service users with all activities of daily living is a core component of this role. Care will be individualised to each service users needs and will be delivered in a dignified and compassionate manner at all time.

Main duties of the job

Service users views will be respected and where possible they will be included in any decisions around their care. Service user safety is of the highest priority and the post holder will ensure that all States of Guernsey policies and procedures are always adhered to. The post holder will be expected to act as a practice assessor/supervisor to more junior members of staff and may be required to take on additional responsibility within the area of work to support the Senior Staff within the team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To carry overall responsibility and management of the home as delegated by the Operations and Home Manager.

To evaluate and implement care after due consultation with all professional colleagues.

To provide and maintain a warm, caring and safe home environment for residents, which is conducive to the physical, psychological and spiritual well-being of the residents as outlined in the philosophy of the Home.

To assist new starters in post along with assisting and monitoring their induction training.

CLINICAL

To assist with the implementation, assessment and evaluation of care for all residents as part of the Professional team.

To liaise with all other members of the multi-disciplinary team, i.e. General Practitioners, Social Workers, hospital staff, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, within the agreed guidelines of the Home.

To actively promote and deliver evidence based best practice

To ensure accurate records are maintain in relation to the care of the residents.

To ensure that correct procedures are followed regarding the ordering, administration and storage of medications in line with Health and Social Care policies and procedures.

To encourage a stimulating environment for residents within the Home.

To encourage bedrooms to be personalised with furniture, photographs and ornaments, if desired by the resident.

To assist with the implementation of agreed nursing care plans. Monitor their effectiveness and assist with their review.

Ensure that relatives, friends and other visitors are welcomed to the home, encouraging close contact between residents, their relatives and friends.

To actively encourage activities, visits to and from the home, reality orientation, reminiscence and other therapy for the residents.

To take all reasonable steps to safeguard the health and well-being of the residents, as well as that of other members of staff and the public by following health, safety and fire procedures.

To respect confidentiality of the residents and the home life at all time

To act in accordance with the NMC (2015) Code of Professional Conduct.

To respond independently to any emergencies that arise, referring on where appropriate.

To follow appropriate moving and handling techniques in the work area whilst maintaining health, safety and security of others.

To abide by all States of Guernsey policies & procedures along with the Staff Handbook.

Comply with the principals contained in the Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2001 concerning improper disclosure, misuse or breach of confidentiality in respect of information held on computer systems or otherwise.

Follow the department COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) policies and procedures.

To be familiar with the testing of the fire alarm and fire evacuation procedure and be able to implement the procedure when necessary.

Adhere to Infection Prevention and Control policies, procedures and best practice as specified.

To complete all mandatory training required for the role.

To attend Staff and other meetings as requested.

To undertake any other duties as and when required.

ADMINISTRATION

Exercise leadership by personal example and maintain high moral, presenting at all times a manner which reflects high professional standards.

To supervise and monitor the work performance of the members of care staff, giving support counselling, advice and guidance as required.

To attend meetings with Care Staff.

To deal with and where appropriate, refer to the Operations and Home Manager all incidents, accidents, complaints and grievances.
