A-Z OF SERVICES

Chemical Pathology is a specialty of pathology which uses a range of chemical tests to diagnose and monitor disease, and the effects and progress of treatment. It is also referred to as clinical/medical biochemistry and is practiced in the medical laboratory and in clinical settings. It involves biochemistry and metabolism, metabolic disorders and their clinical management, biochemical investigation, laboratory operations, complex analytical work, expert interpretation of results, and the provision of informed advice and recommendations for clinical management of patients, across specialties and in collaboration with other medical teams. It also involves patient care and clinical management, in secondary care settings, of patients with metabolic disorders. Chemical pathology services are provided by multidisciplinary teams of clinical scientists, biomedical scientists, and medical consultants, including Chemical Pathologists, in hospitals and medical laboratories. Related services include nutrition or lipid clinics, or endocrinology and toxicology services.

Chemical Pathology Jobs

Chemical Pathologists manage laboratories that undertake biochemical investigations and provide clinical and scientific leadership. They conduct chemical pathology investigations by taking specimens of bodily fluids and running biochemical tests which help identify chemical changes in the body, diagnose disease, monitor health and monitor a patient’s response to treatment. They collaborate with specialists and medical teams in the hospital, across specialties and primary care, providing detailed and accurate analysis and interpretation of results to help guide patient care. They provide direct clinical care to patients with metabolic disorders, and may lead clinics associated with nutrition, inborn errors of metabolism in adults, cardiovascular risk management, and management of disorders of lipid metabolism, calcium and bone metabolism, and diabetes mellitus. They may contribute to endocrinology or toxicology services, or be involved in research, development or education. To pursue a career in this field, doctors who have completed foundation and core training, can apply to undertake specialist training in chemical pathology, a five-year program leading to a CCT or CESR (CP), FRCPath, and entry onto the GMC specialist register.
