A-Z OF SERVICES

Paramedicine is emergency care provided in out-of-hospital environments. Services include ambulance services, patient transport, military medic services, remote/rescue operations, disaster response and other first-responder emergency care services. See Emergency Medicine for more information. Emergency medical services are made up of a network of first responders, including phone operators, drivers, ambulance care assistants, paramedics, and other retrieval medical staff, who link with emergency departments in hospitals and other acute care/trauma care and rehabilitation facilities. Teamwork, communication and decision-making skills are very important parts of paramedicine, the ambulance service and emergency care. Services involve multi-disciplinary teams of specialist doctors, nurses, surgeons, emergency responders, paramedics, drivers, pilots, support staff, administration staff, and volunteers.

Paramedicine Jobs

Paramedics provide rapid response and emergency health care in the out-of-hospital environment. They are first responders to medical emergencies, often working without supervision and making critical decisions. They assess, stabilise and manage patients, transport them to health facilities, and provide patient records/handover for further care. They work with emergency care assistants or technicians and within the wider multi-disciplinary emergency care team. Paramedics have completed an approved degree in paramedic science (or an apprenticeship degree). Paramedics can progress in their careers to be a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) paramedic, a specialist paramedic in mental health, an advanced paramedic in critical care, or a consultant paramedic.

Ambulance Service - other roles, including call handlers, emergency medical dispatchers, emergency care assistants or technicians, and Patient Transport Service (PTS) drivers, provide operational support within their teams. These roles involve emergency and stressful situations, technical skills, teamwork and communication. Often employers provide apprenticeships, on-the-job training, and career progression opportunities.
