Speech and Language Therapy is an allied health field which studies speech, language and swallowing disorders. These disorders can affect a range of people, from infants to the elderly, and may be congenital or acquired through brain injury. Speech and Language Therapy uses a range of techniques to assess and treat these disorders and to help develop and improve speaking, communication, and swallowing skills. It is practiced in private clinics, in integrated health care settings in hospitals, and in the community, including schools and workplaces.

Speech and Language Therapy Jobs

Speech and Language Therapists work with children and adults to assess and treat a range of speech, communication and swallowing disorders. They get to know their patients and their specific needs. They use a range of therapies to help them improve expressive and receptive language skills, fluency, speech and voice sounds, cognitive and social communication skills, and feeding and swallowing skills. They educate their patients and their caregivers. Speech and Language Therapists complete a Bachelor of Science - Speech and Language Therapy, or alternatively a degree apprenticeship or postgraduate studies in this field, and register with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
