Job summary

It can be difficult to gain employment as a GPN without experience and the appropriate training, therefore we have created the Staffordshire GPN Foundation School to address this directly. We want to support the development of GPNs across the whole of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Supported by NHS England, Queens Nursing Institute, GP Deanery, Staffordshire Integrated Care System and Integrated Care Board, this innovative programme has been designed to provide a standardised pathway into General Practice Nursing suitable for newly qualified nurses and nurses new to General Practice.

We are looking to recruit up to 25 Nurses who want to develop a career as a GPN in Staffordshire. Newly qualified nurses (or due to qualify in September 2024) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

This is a trainee GPN position on a 12-month fixed term training contract and as an NMC Registrant, you will be an active member of the workforce team. You will be supported in General Practice with an allocated clinical educator / supervisor. You will learn a wide range of fundamental skills to ensure you become a qualified GPN over the 12mth programme.

You will attend University one day a week to undertake the Fundamentals in General Practice Nursing course. This course will equip you with the core skills required for the role. It is aligned to the Primary Care and GPN Career and Core Capabilities Framework (2022). The course will develop your clinical and academic skills and prepare you for a career in general practice.

Over the course of the year you will learn to undertake a range of General Practice Nursing duties, assessing, delivering and evaluating appropriate care / treatment in conjunction with nursing teams and GPs according to practice policy, protocols etc.

About us

North Staffordshire GP Federation will employ you on behalf of the Staffordshire GPN Foundation School on a 12-month, fixed-term contract.

Terms and conditions: Salary £28,407 per annum, pension offered will be the Peoples Pension, 37.5 hrs a week (minimum 30 hours would be considered).

Fully funded Level 6, 60 credit post graduate certificate in General Practice Nursing to be undertaken during the 12mth programme.

We will work with you to secure employment with a Staffordshire GP Practice at the end of the 12-month fixed term contract.

RESPONSIBILITES

Professional Responsibilities

  • Work within your scope of practice and competencies according to the NMC code of conduct
  • Engage in all compulsory elements of the programme offered within the GPN Foundation School
  • Recognise the opportunities for working in partnership with the Primary Health care team
  • Maintain your own continuing professional development in line with NMC revalidation requirements
  • Work within integrated practice-based teams and take all opportunities for multidisciplinary working
  • Use evidence-based guidelines in conjunction with the practice nursing team
  • Assist the nursing teams to deliver effective implementation of management of patients with long term conditions as detailed by the GMS GP contract Quality and Outcomes framework.

Clinical

All the elements listed below will be taught and supported throughout the duration of the programme:

  • Ensure that current evidence-based approaches to patient are standard practice
  • After appropriate training, administer adult and paediatric injections under an individualised prescription, Patient Specific Direction (PSD) or Patient Group Direction (PGD), ensuring safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs
  • Deliver an adult and childhood immunisation programme working to PGD - following appropriate training
  • Gain experience in Long Term Condition Management
  • Undertake opportunistic screening when clinically required
  • Learn to perform cervical screening
  • You will learn to deliver a personalised care approach, involving patients in shared decision making to improve healthy lifestyle choices and health outcomes
  • Deliver travel health care, including vaccinations and advice for patients - following appropriate training
  • Follow the Safeguarding of Adults and Children policy to recognise the signs of child neglect and abuse, family violence, vulnerable adults, substance misuse, addictive behaviours, and suicidal tendencies and be aware of local referral procedures
  • Apply infection control measures when collecting and handling of laboratory specimens, disposing of waste materials, dealing with blood and body fluids spillages and report and treat sharps injuries
  • Undertake first aid and management of emergencies, e.g. burns, haemorrhage, hypo/hyperglycaemic emergencies/asthma attacks
  • Undertake annual training and demonstrate competency in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques
  • Support the practice in achieving quality indicators and targets of the GMS contract and any relevant locally enhanced services.

Research, Audit and Quality

  • Contribute to the provision of equitable, high-quality services for patients in the locality
  • Maintain an interest in national research initiatives and disseminate appropriate information to health professionals utilising the GPN Foundation School
  • Ensure all care is evidence based using up to date validated literature
  • Contribute to research and development programmes where required to improve clinical practice
  • Engage with the Staffordshire Supporting Innovation in Practice Group for GPNs to support the dissemination of best practice.

Education and Training

  • Follow identified training needs, participate in training opportunities
  • Engage in peer support, preceptorship program if appropriate and clinical supervision to support your learning
  • As a registered nurse you will need to provide supervision and guidance for health care support workers, student Nursing Associates and qualified Nursing Associates where necessary
  • Participate in educational programmes of awareness raising, detection and prevention of long-term conditions diseases
  • Develop knowledge and skills to advise members of the public on the concepts of health promotion, education, prevention, and protection
  • Demonstrate an enquiring and inquisitive mind, seeking out new knowledge to benefit patient care
  • Take responsibility for personal development and education, maintaining professional development by attending relevant courses and study days to keep abreast of current knowledge and developments
  • Actively participate in multidisciplinary education and training
  • Monitor and maintain consistency of professional standards and take appropriate action if standards are not met
  • Abide by the legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice and record and maintain periodic professional registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)

  • Complete all mandatory training modules as specified by the Staffordshire GPN Foundation School.

Communication

  • Ensure the GPN Foundation School team are aware of any issues or concerns that may impact on your training experience

  • Assist in clinical audit and the setting and monitoring of standards of care
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.

COMPETENCE

As a registrant of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) you are accountable for your actions and will work within your clinical competencies. There will be a learning agreement in place between yourself, as a training GPN, and your supervising Practice. If you have any doubts about your competence during the course of your duties, you should immediately speak to your clinical supervisor in the first instance and then raise with the GPN Foundation School leadership team.

You must maintain registration with NMC. Medical Indemnity is provided the Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice.

SUPERVISION

Supervision is provided within the placement area and will be an experienced registered General Practice Nurse. It is the responsibility of the post holder to ensure compliance with this requirement and to inform the GPN Foundation School leadership team if this is not happening or if any concerns are raised.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

The first six months of your employment will be a probationary period. We may bring your employment to an end during your probationary period at any time by giving you one week's written notice or by making a payment in lieu. We may, at our discretion, extend the probationary period. During this probationary period, we will carefully monitor your performance and suitability for your role.

RISK MANAGEMENT

It is a standard element of the role and responsibility of all staff that they fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards.

HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
