Job summary

The post will provide whole time consultant level commitment to obstetrics services at the Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust (at the Crown Street and University Hospital Aintree sites) and provide support to the existing Diabetes, Hypertension and Cardiac high risk antenatal clinics.

The post is to support the existing team of obstetricians who provide high-risk antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care in a locum capacity for 12 months duration to provide specific support to the already established Diabetes, Hypertension and Cardiac high risk antenatal clinics. LWHFT currently provides services to women across Cheshire, Merseyside, and North Wales.

Main duties of the job

The job plan will be negotiated with the clinical lead for maternity following successful appointment to the post, but an example is given below. It will include Maternal Medicine Antenatal Clinics, Delivery Suite, Maternity Assessment Unit, elective caesarean section list and Maternity Base (antenatal/postnatal) ward rounds. A typical job plan will consist of 7.5DCC, 1.5 SPA and 1 PA for additional specified roles.

This post will have approximately 1 day a month on the Delivery Suite (08.30-20.30 hours). This also covers activities on the Midwife Led Unit and the Maternity Assessment Unit (at times when there is no dedicated consultant cover). A monthly elective caesarean section list is also included.

The obstetric service will provide 108.5 hours resident consultant Delivery Suite cover (08.30-00.00 hours, 7 days a week) from April 2023, with the vision of providing 24/7 resident cover in the next 1-2 years.

The successful candidate will participate in the 'Consultant of the Week' ward round rota (Monday to Friday 09.00-17.00 hours). This includes incident reviews, attending the 'Term Admissions' meeting on a Thursday 08.15-09.00 hours, and reviews pregnant women admitted to LUHFT for non-obstetric reasons. Other clinical commitments will be cancelled during this week.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Primary medical degree of a recognised University
  • Full registration and Licence to Practice with the GMC
  • MRCOG or equivalent / CCT or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee
  • ATSM in Maternal Medicine / high risk pregnancy or equivalent experience
  • ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice or equivalent

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • General Obstetrics and Gynaecology equivalent to that required for UK CCT

Desirable

  • Obstetric ultrasound experience
  • Human factors training
  • Fetal monitoring training

Management and administrative experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of Element 4 of Saving Babies' Lives Version Two
  • Understanding of the principles of clinical governance
  • Experience in the development of clinical guidelines
  • Experience of audit

Desirable

  • Management or leadership qualification
  • Evidence of completion of quality improvement projects leading to service improvement
  • Evidence of service user involvement in service development

Teaching experience

Essential

  • Enthusiasm for teaching at all levels
