Job summary

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department at UHB Trust has undergone a rapid recent expansion of staff and service provision, along with enhancement of its role as well as regional and national profile. There is a thriving programme of quality improvement. It is rapidly becoming one of the most exciting places in the UK to practice orthopaedic surgery.

We are looking to appoint a consultant to our innovative and ambitious Orthopaedic department which is expanding both clinically and academically in terms of number of consultants, workload and increasing sub-specialisation. This purpose of this appointment is to increase the existing level of elective and trauma surgery within the department.

We are looking for highly committed and enthusiastic individuals who can integrate fully into the department which has remained a cohesive, well balanced and immensely friendly department in which to work.

Consultant monthly department meetings are held to address management and departmental issues and there are also regular clinical governance and QIPS meetings to address specific issues and identify actions to move the service forward.

The department provides teaching and research commitments associated with the University of Birmingham as well as the Birmingham and Warwickshire Orthopaedic Training Programmes.

Main duties of the job

The post advertised is for 2 appointments within the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust based at Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital (HGS) sites. The appointment is in line with the department's ambitious vision to restore and expand its elective capacity and intended to support and expand the MDT Femoral Fragility Service( FFS) team based at Heartlands Hospital. The FFS provides highly specialised care to 1250 frail patients annually with Hip fracture.

The successful candidates must have experience in the fixation of peri/interprosthetic femoral fractures using modern MIPPO techniques. They are also expected to have experience in lower limb revision arthroplasty including proximal and distal femoral replacements. The successful candidates will also provide elective primary and revision lower limb arthroplasty activity.

The posts will support the department's needs as well as capabilities within the full range of general Trauma & Orthopaedic on-call work, including adult and paediatric trauma, outside referrals and in-house emergencies.

The trust is a Major Trauma Centre and is one of the busiest elective centres in England. The T&O department delivers services across multiple sites, so the applicant will be expected to work on different sites as part of their normal job plan.

  • *Current ATLS or European Trauma Course provider or instructor
  • *Orthopaedic on call service managing complex trauma in both adults and children
