Speech and Language Therapist for children with learning disabilities and/or a diagnosis of autism

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly and dynamic MDT, supporting children and young people with a learning disability living in Gwent. This role will involve working across the Intensive Positive Behaviour Support (iPBS) Team and the Child and Adolescents Learning Disability Service (CALDS). The post requires experience and skills in supporting the complex communication needs of this population. CALDS offers assessment and intervention to children and young people with moderate to severe learning disabilities, aged 4 and over. The IPBS team works alongside CALDS, working intensively with children and their networks to promote a holistic understanding of the needs of children and young people with Learning Disabilities and/or a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition, who are presenting with extreme behaviours that challenge risking system breakdown. The SLT role will sit within a multidisciplinary team, comprising of Learning Disability Nurses, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Consultant Psychiatry and Child Development Advisors.

Main duties of the job

You will be innovative and enthusiastic, with a particular interest in supporting evidence based practice and delivering effective services to children with a learning disability and/or Autism and their families. You will have experience and knowledge of working within and supporting a multi-disciplinary context, working with partnership services, including Education and Local Authority. You will have knowledge of the issues and policies affecting services for individuals with a learning disability and additional training required for the role will be made available, e.g. BTEC PBS diploma. As a health board Speech and Language Therapy service, we offer peer support, regular team meetings, with second opinions available from clinical leads. Clinical supervision will be provided from within ABUHB Paediatric SLT service and the successful applicant will access support from the Complex Needs Team.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Speech and Language Therapy Degree
  • Registered with HCPC

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of performing and analysing highly complex assessments
  • Significant post graduate experience in speciality services.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with people with learning disabilities

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent and sensitive interpersonal skills including observation, listening, counselling and empathy skills with people with disordered communication skills.
  • Able to analyse complex assessment information for complex cases and make specialist clinical decisions

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of national policies in Health and Social Care
