Job summary

Medical Engineering currently has a Band 5 Technologist vacancy within The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH). The department is responsible for the management of Medical devices including commissioning, repair, maintenance and disposal for SaTH and external bodies within Shropshire and the surrounding regions. The vacancy is predominantly based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH), however the post holder may be required to work at other sites as the service demands.

The role is interesting and varied and the successful candidate can expect to support the Trust's medical devices throughout their life cycle including acceptance processes, scheduled preventative maintenance, servicing, calibration, repairs, decommissioning and safe disposal of the equipment.

You will be a skilled and self-motivated engineer, educated to HNC level in a suitable engineering subject with proven experience of working unsupervised on electrical/ electronic/ mechanical equipment and be able to demonstrate the desire to continue your professional development through internal and external training courses.

The post involves working with other healthcare professionals, often in clinical areas, therefore excellent communication skills will be required to interact with medical, nursing and technical staff.

Main duties of the job

Main duties involve the commissioning, maintenance and repair of patient connected medical devices, both in a workshop and clinical environment. the post holder will be expected to work at locations other than Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, according to the demands of the service.

Medical Engineering operates an ISO:9001 and ISO:13485 quality system, therefore knowledge and experience of operating within these systems would be of benefit to the department to maintain its principles of continuous improvement.

About us

Medical Engineering scope is approximately 30000 medical devices of which almost 21000 belong to SATH. MES also service external contracts with Shropshire Community, as well as some private customers. The department is split between two main sites (RSH & PRH) with a maintenance team based at each site. The department is also responsible for the service and maintenance support for the Renal Service in Shropshire, which includes three Renal Units plus a cohort of home dialysis patients.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • HNC/HTEC/HND/Foundation Degree appropriate Engineering Subject or Equivalent work-related experience evidenced by portfolio. Must be willing to work towards HNC.

Desirable

  • B.Sc./B.Eng. degree in appropriate Engineering or relevant Subject
  • Member of a Professional Body
  • Registered as a Clinical Technologist
  • Technical Certificates for Medical Device Maintenance

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of competency in the application of engineering and technology
  • Service and repair experience in an appropriate equipment maintenance environment

Desirable

  • Experience of working within a Medical Equipment service environment
  • Specific Specialist servicing capabilities
  • Service and repair experience in an appropriate equipment maintenance environment
  • Evidence of competency in the application of engineering and technology
