An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic doctor to join the current Obstetrics and Gynaecology team as a clinical fellow in global womens health at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The service is delivered through four sites: St James University Hospital (SJUH), Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), Wharfdale General Hospital and Seacroft Hospital.

This is a non-training post, however, it allows the post holder, including applicants who already hold CCT, to gain experience that will help to secure future posts and help deliver global health projects that the department is involved with.

Almost all the sub-specialities in Obstetrics and Gynaecology are provided for at our centre.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology inpatient and outpatient services as well as being part of the second on call rota with an on all frequency of 1 in 8. The post holder will predominantly work at the SJUH and LGI sites. Duties will involve but will not be limited to working on the labour ward, reviewing obstetric and gynaecology (including early pregnancy) emergencies and looking after antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology inpatients as well as attending antenatal and gynaecology clinics. There will be opportunities to develop special interests in one of the following areas:

- Gynaecology postgraduate training including simulation

- Maternal medicine

- Placenta accreta spectrum service

- Colposcopy

- Cancer diagnostics

Clinical duties

The post holder will predominantly work at the SJUH and LGI sites. There will be opportunities to develop special interests in one of the following areas:

- Gynaecology postgraduate training including simulation

Teaching

The post holder will be encouraged to undertake audit, and to partake in undergraduate and peer-led postgraduate teaching as required. In addition, they will support a remote teaching programme taking place in Uganda and assist with laparoscopic simulation training.

There is a well-developed departmental postgraduate programme that includes educational meetings and monthly quality perinatal morbidity and mortality, audit and human factors teaching that the successful applicant will be expected to take an active part in.

Global womens health

One day a week when not on call should be dedicated to global womens health work. There are strong departmental links with Uganda and a key role is to support the current partnership between West Yorkshire and Harrogate Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) and the Kampala Metropolitan LMNS including the implementation of a THET funded obstetric skills training programme in the Kampala Metropolitan LMNS. Whilst there is no funding included for travel to Uganda, we would be supportive of the postholder applying for funding to travel and taking leave to travel to Uganda in with college tutor agreement at a mutually suitable time.

Person Specification

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

Essential

  • Have completed their post-graduate training at least to a level of an ST2 specialty doctor or equivalent in obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Possess or eligible to apply for GMC Registration
  • Familiarity with UK health system and NHS
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
  • Applicants must have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as assessed by the GMC
  • Applicants must meet professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice).

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree qualification
  • Completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent
  • Basic Adult Life Support training within past 12/12
  • MRCOG Part 1
  • Competencies equivalent to ST3 training

Desirable

  • MRCOG part 2 exam
  • MRCOG part 3 exam
  • Prizes / Distinctions
  • Research / Additional academic publications
  • Postgraduate qualifications in medical education or international health

Experience

Essential
