Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a motivated Ophthalmologist to take up the position of Locally Employed Doctor - Fellow in Glaucoma Ophthalmology. This is an important post within the department and we are hoping to recruit an innovative and committed individual.

This is a new post and the post-holder will continue to further develop the hospital's Glaucoma Ophthalmology Service.

You will be a highly valued member of the team bringing your expertise and skills to a busy Ophthalmology department. The post will provide an opportunity to improve and develop our already established sub-specialty in Paediatric Ophthalmology.

This post is not recognised by the Royal College of Ophthalmologist for higher surgical training but will provide excellent clinical experience and teaching opportunities in a busy and dynamic Ophthalmology Department.

Main duties of the job

The Successful applicant will work innovatively with our clinical team and a range of partners to research, design and delivery the Paediatric Ophthalmology Service. Key partners will be the Trust A&E Departments, Optometrists, GP's Nurses and Managers in the Integrated Care Board.

The Ophthalmology service has departments and theatres at three Trust sites (Doncaster, Bassetlaw and Mexborough), but whenever possible split site working within the same day would be avoided. Your individual job plan will be reviewed and agreed annually.

Secretarial support is provided at Bassetlaw Hospital, Montagu Hospital and Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

The successful candidate will be supported in developing their sub-specialty interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology. He/she will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and work closely with consultant colleagues for the proper functioning of the department.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBchB/MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCOphth part 1 or equivalent
  • MRCOphth part 3 or equivalent
  • Completed at least three years' full-time postgraduate training in Ophthalmology & one year experience in Paediatric Ophthalmology. Trainee in a relevant specialty, or equivalent experience and competencies
  • Must have or be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council at time of appointment and continue to hold a License to Practise.

Experience and Achievements

Essential

  • Must be able to demonstrate clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Ophthalmology
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the role
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need

Desirable

  • Understanding current issues within Ophthalmology and the future direction of the specialty
  • Understanding current issues within the wider NHS

Teaching and training

Essential

  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.

Desirable

  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications

Audit and Research

Essential

  • Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects and the implementation of outcomes

Desirable

  • Critical Appraisal Skills
  • Evidence of knowledge of research methodology
