An exciting opportunity has arisen to come and be part of our brand-new female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit

Motivated to create a brand-new ward and improving our service users experience?

We are looking for passionate, dedicated and highly motivated individuals to be part of a transforming team at Woodbank Female Psychiatric Intensive Unit (6 bedded unit) at Stepping Hill Hospital.

You will act as a positive role model that positively reflects the philosophy of the unit and the values of the trust. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested and committed to delivering excellent care within a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment.

We will be offering an 8-10-week induction prior to the unit opening focusing on principles of trauma informed care, clinical risk, care planning, managing violence and aggression, STORM training, Physical health training, least restrictive/Safewards training, mandatory training, ILS/BLS and Fire drills to enable for you to feel well equipped and confident prior to the opening of the unit. You will also be a crucial part of creating the ward environment prior to the opening of the unit.

You will have the opportunity to connect with other Occupational Therapist within RHS and across the trust. You will be supported and given time to access clinical supervision. There will be an opportunity for professional development and access further MOHO training.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and develop and co-ordinate Occupational therapy for service users within the Psychiatric intensive care service.

The post holder will supervise and support the technical instructor and junior staff as applicable to their role.

The post holder will provide a variety of group and individual treatment interventions, promoting a recovery and social inclusion focused approach. They will provide assessment and intervention on the unit and in the community.

The post holder will contribute to clinical evaluation and promote use of evidence based practice to inform service improvement

Our team provides short-term intensive assessment, treatment, and support to Service Users, who maybe experiencing a mental health crisis, and often present with a variety of complex mental health needs.

To maximise Service User recovery, the teams will be working in a trauma informed way and utilising the RAID model of care. Our aim is to work in the least restrictive way as possible whilst maintaining patient safety.

Upon joining our team, we will ensure that successful candidates undergo both mandatory and bespoke training, to fully equip them with the skills required to work within our PICU environment

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc Occupational Therapy
  • Registration with the Health Professionals Council
  • Training in Model of Human Occupation
  • Post registration diploma or equivalent experience in relevant field

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of applying the OT process with people with acute mental health needs
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of competent performance at Band 5 in an acute mental health setting.
  • Experience of independently managing a case load.
  • Experience of contributing to MDT risk assessments
  • Demonstration of reflective practice and use of constructive feedback to aid development
  • Experience of setting up / facilitating and evaluating therapeutic group activities

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of Occupational Therapy Process
  • Understanding of specific needs of clients with mental health problems and their impact on occupational functioning
  • Sound understanding of current government policies in relation to Acute Care including national guidelines, Mental Health Act, Risk Assessment processes and CPA processes.
  • Good organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Awareness of Occupational Therapy Model of Human Occupation Assessment Tools and other OT models
  • Interest in engaging in Occupational Therapy service development.

Skills and abilities

  • Ability to assess for and make recommendations for the delivery of complex care packages.
  • Must have the ability to manage complex and sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and assertively when presenting information to service users and the MDT
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to provide leadership for the team.
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision for junior staff / support staff and OT students.

  • Ability to audit outcomes of assessments and OT service provided.

Work Related Circumstances

Essential

  • Demonstration of professionalism through good timekeeping, adherence to policies and maintaining strong relations within the MDT
  • Basic level of computer literacy
  • Able to work effectively under pressure
  • Use of a car or access to a means of mobility to travel across the Trust footprint in line with service needs
  • Willing to carry out all duties and responsibilities of the post in accordance with the Trust's Equal Opportunities and Equality and Diversity policies
  • Appointments to regulated and controlled activities require an enhanced DBS disclosure.

Desirable

  • Willingness to participate in activities that aid the development the Mental Health Inpatient Unit.
