Job summary

We are looking to recruit a locum Consultant Scientist in Biochemistry to join our relatively small team to help make a big contribution to our users and ultimately our patients. Being a busy medium sized district general hospital with very close links with primary care and all of our users. The aim of this locum post is to back fill a consultant clinical scientist whilst they are engaged with the project of delivering a new LIMS computer system for Pathology.

This post will provide continuity of service whilst the department establishes a LIMS system suitable for the future service delivery, and applicants should possess the FRCPath and HPCP registration.

As well as contributing to the evolving Biochemistry service Input into POCT will be required and working closely with our Haematology sections is encouraged. We are looking forward to being contacted to discuss the post and reading your application.

SHH Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory holds UKAS accreditation and provides comprehensive services to the population of Stockport and High Peak receiving a large and varied workload.

Main duties of the job

(i) Clinical:

  1. Clinical guidance, scientific advice and assistance to clinicians on selection, performance and interpretation of clinical tests
  2. Provide consultant clinical expertise and advice to hospital clinicians, GPs and external users of the service.
  3. The post holder will interpret highly complex clinical and pathological data and be responsible for clinical authorisation of laboratory reports.
  4. To be responsible for the creation, implementation and review of evidence based clinical guidelines in conjunction with other consultant colleagues and clinical users.
  5. To participate in ward rounds and clinical discussion meetings as required, giving advice on selection, availability and interpretation of biochemical tests if required.
  6. To participate in meetings with clinical users of the service and contribute to service delivery.
  7. To prepare and present clinical cases at departmental, regional and national clinical meetings.

(ii) Laboratory - Scientific and Technical

  • To maintain up to date specialist expertise and knowledge in Clinical Biochemistry and that such knowledge is passed to other staff, where appropriate.
  • To provide expertise in the selection and development of analytical methods employed and to maintain full awareness of their reactions, limitations and causes of interference or error.
  • To critically evaluate analytical methods and equipment prior to introduction and maintain at highest possible standards within the resources available.

  • An understanding of NHS management responsibilities of consultants. Attendance at an appropriate management course.

Professional skills
