Job summary

The post holder is expected to be a key and dynamic member of the Cardiac Physiology Team, using their expertise and knowledge to provide technical/scientific proficiency to support and develop the Echo service provision. This role is designed to enhance the skills and principles of a competent and effective highly specialised cardiac physiologist/ scientist within the ECHO department. The post holder is expected to hold all the relevant skills for advanced echocardiographic imaging in both physiologist and consultant led settings, including. Areas of focus will include the following:

1. Adult TTE including complex Echo (stress, contrast, 3D, strain - using the latest technologies and software.

2. Structural cardiology -- Cath lab work, both physiologists led TTE and consultant led TOE during TAVI, BAV, percutaneous ASD and paravalvular leak closure procedures.

3. Working alongside consults during TOE Stress echoes imaging

4. Emergency and urgent scanning (including intensive care work)

Main duties of the job

The main objective of this position is for the post holder to become a key and dynamic member of the non- invasive Cardiac Physiology Echocardiography Team. The post will involve highly developed, tertiary level echocardiography in outpatient, inpatient, cath labs and theatre settings, including complex echo and TOE. The post will also involve the development of the department through research, audit and education. The post holder will demonstrate high levels of leadership and actively train junior members of the department. The post holder will also hold the trust values of compassion, excellence and collaboration in high regard.

The main objective of this position is for the post holder to become a key and dynamic member of the non- invasive Cardiac Physiology Echocardiography Team. Using their expertise and developing knowledge to provide technical/scientific expertise in ECHO, the key activities that are expected of the post holder once training is complete are as follows;

1. Perform advanced TTE in accordance with BSE guidelines and department standards/protocol

2. Provide a comprehensive report for each study

3. Designated supervision and mentoring of junior colleagues within the department

4. Responsible for archiving of data to appropriate places as per trust policies

5. Ensure that personal knowledge is current, reflecting change in clinical echocardiography

6. Perform the role of highly specialised physiologist within transoesophageal and stress echo teams, including interpretation, record keeping and patient care/safety

7. To be part of the echo catheter lab team during TOE/TTE guided structural heart interventions (ASD/PFO/LAA /Paravalvular closures, EP procedures and TAVI)

8. To work towards performing agitated saline studies/contrast studies

9. To review, maintain and develop agreed standards of documentation in accordance with BSE guidelines and department minimum standards, in liaison with peer physiologist

10. The post holder will participate, as required, in clinical and non-clinical audit projects aimed at improving patient care and the effective and efficient delivery of services

11. Take on an area of managerial responsibility within echo such as recruitment, human resource matters, education, information technology, e-rostering, rotas, procurement, SOP and Datix incident issues

12. Is responsible for contributing to the development of policies within own function or service and supporting implementation

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc clinical science or equivalent, or HNC MPPM or equivalent
  • Accreditation from BSE in echocardiography (TTE) or working towards

Desirable

  • ILS
  • MSc Cardiac Science
  • Registered with RCCP or registration with the AHCS as a Cardiac Scientist

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience of working in an echo department as a band 6 (or above) cardiac physiologist

Desirable

  • Experience with Philips and ISCV reporting stations
  • Previous experience of supervising staff
  • Experience with more complex echo procedures such as stress, TOE, ACHD
  • Experience of teaching individuals and lecturing to groups

Additional Criteria

  • Knowledge of echo complications and ability to troubleshoot these issues
  • Report echos to a high standard and to BSE guidelines
  • Have a confident expert knowledge of the physiology of the heart.
  • The ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team ensuring high quality care
