BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST - Clinical Biochemistry - Band 5/6

Permanent Contract - Full time (37.5h/week including full participation with the 24/7 shift rota).

(Banding subject to candidate meeting all essential criteria of Band 5 or Band 6 Person Specification).

An exciting opportunity has arisen for suitably qualified Specialist Biomedical Scientists (Band 6) /Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) to join our friendly but busy Clinical Biochemistry team at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. The Blood Sciences Department handles in excess of 8 million tests per year.

Main duties of the job

Suitable candidates will be required to have extensive Clinical Biochemistry knowledge, experience and successfully completed their IBMS registration and specialist portfolio or equivalent qualification.

Consideration may be given to applicants who can demonstrate that they are near to completion of their specialist portfolio and if successful would be paid at Band 5 rate until completed.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate with the 24/7 shift rota within 3 months of joining the team.

You will need to be able to demonstrate that you are self-motivated, organised and participating in current/recent CPD activities. You will be working alongside Medical Laboratory Assistants', Assistant Practitioners, Biomedical Scientists, Consultant Clinical staff and will be expected to work in ALL of the clinical biochemistry sections (subject to training and competency assessment).

The department is ISO 15189 accredited and various projects are in progress, including new Blood Science analysers and new LIMS system. The successful candidate will be required to engage fully with this process and support implementation and development of these projects.

  • To participate in the routine and specialist work of all sections of the department.
  • To work all aspects of the 24/7 shift rota/out of hours service to maintain service provision.
  • To be responsible for ones own work (as per HCPC standards), when working independently and as part of a team.
  • To ensure laboratory instruments are maintained and are in working order as per departmental standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • To maintain a high quality of work within the department and perform all aspects of quality control procedures including troubleshooting.
  • Apply specialist knowledge to check the technical validity and quality of all results and processes in the area of responsibility.
  • To assist the department with maintaining ISO accreditation.
  • Training/supervision of junior and less experienced staff grades.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • UK BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (or equivalent acceptable to IBMS/HCPC) OR UK ENIC confirmed equivalent qualification
  • Reference to IBMS Specialist Portfolio for the relevant discipline or relevant experience - see desirable criteria
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as per requirements to maintain HCPC registration

Desirable

  • (Band 5) Working towards (or expressed interest in) completing the IBMS Specialist Portfolio for the relevant discipline.
  • (Band 6) - Successful completion of the discipline relevant IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent OR At least 2 years current/recent experience in an NHS lab working as a Band 6 BMS (successful candidates will be expected to complete the IBMS specialist portfolio upon appointment if they do not hold a relevant MSc and/or have sufficient experience in an NHS lab)
  • Relevant IT qualification e.g. ECDL or equivalent
  • Discipline Specific MSc
  • Membership of the IBMS
  • Evidence of recent further study in Biomedical subjects or other relevant qualifications or courses

Knowledge

Essential

  • Possess current general theoretical, practical and working knowledge of the relevant laboratory discipline to ensure and maintain HCPC registration.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Laboratory IT systems including analyser Middleware
  • Able to review and develop own knowledge and skills to improve own performance.
  • Working knowledge of Quality Management Systems, Quality Assurance, ISO 15189 Laboratory accreditation and MHRA standards

Experience

Essential

  • Current/Recent Experience working in a clinical laboratory in the relevant discipline - see desirable criteria
  • Working all aspects of the 24/7 shift rota including lone working to maintain service provision
  • Experience of using appropriate Laboratory IT systems in relevant discipline
  • Experience of using appropriate Laboratory instrumentation and techniques in relevant discipline
  • Performing audits and contribute to laboratory QMS

Desirable

  • (Band 5) More than 6 months current/recent experience working in a clinical laboratory in the relevant discipline
  • (Band 6) More than 2 years current/recent experience working in a clinical laboratory in the relevant discipline
  • Experience in a NHS clinical laboratory
  • (Band 6) Dealing with conflict and difficult colleagues/service users
  • (Band 6) Training/supervision of junior and less experienced staff grades
