Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Perfusion Scientists at any stage of their career to be part of the extensive range of highly specialised services that we provide for our patients. We are searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our existing team of Clinical Perfusion Scientists. Applicants should be competent in a range of perfusion techniques used in adult cardiac surgery and be familiar with therapies such as intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation, intra-operative cell salvage and coagulation monitoring with thromboelastography.

Candidates who do not fulfil the job description for band 8b position will be considered for band 8a job positions depending on relevant clinical experience.

Main duties of the job

This role would be ideally suited to candidates seeking exposure to perfusion techniques beyond those encountered during routine adult cardiac surgery. Although experience of ECMO techniques is desirable, it is not essential and further training in this area will be given to the successful candidate.

  • Accreditation with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland (SCPS) and registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland (CCPS) are essential for bands 8a and 8b.
  • The successful candidate will be required to fully participate in the 24-hour On-Call service. We currently offer a 37.5 hour week, spread over 4 days including evenings and weekends.
  • Select and prepare under aseptic conditions the appropriated cardiopulmonary bypass equipment according to the needs of the patient and the surgical procedure. This may involve manual handling of heavy equipment.
  • Implement a perfusion strategy for an individual patient based on the pre assessment of the patient records and discussion with the relevant medical groups. This will involve close working relationships with staff in a stressful working environment.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary bypass without supervision depending upon experience. Training and supervision will be given where necessary.
  • Participate in a range of Clinical Perfusion services including, IABP, ECMO, CPB, VAD's, POCT depending upon experience.

Job responsibilities

    • As an accredited clinical perfusionist you will be part of a dynamic team providing extra corporeal circulation to all patients having cardiac surgery.
    • The post holder is expected to carry out adult cardiopulmonary bypass without direct supervision.
    • Provide teaching, training and supervision to unqualified trainee perfusionists whilst maintaining a safe working environment.
    • Provide teaching, training and supervision to senior clinical perfusionists whilst maintaining a safe working environment.
    • To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide perfusion services for any area specified. (CathLab, ICU, A&E).
    • Depending upon experience, support the head of perfusion in the management of the clinical area. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action on behalf of the Head of Perfusion and Perfusion department.
    • To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of a particular group of staff delegated by the head of perfusion.
    • Act as a clinical role model and leader for all members of staff and provide a high standard of care to all patients.
    • Primarily based at Denmark Hill, but may be required to work cross-site.
    • The post holder is expected to carry out adult cardiopulmonary bypass without direct supervision.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Postgraduate diploma in Clinical Perfusion Science
  • PgDip / MSc in Perfusion Sciences
  • Must have SCPS accreditation/ registration or have acquired this within 1 year of entry to the UK
  • Accreditation by Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Conversant with the equipment and devices used for the delivery of routine and specialist clinical perfusion techniques to patients
  • Demonstrate continuing professional development, practice and experience enable re-accreditation and re-registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland and the Health Professions Council.
  • Evidence of policy and/or protocol development and post incident reporting.
  • Published author or co-author of peer reviewed scientific literature.
  • Research experience, methodology and demonstrable aptitude for statistical analysis, presentation and publication of findings

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Familiar with a wide range of specialist and routine clinical perfusion techniques.
  • Able to communicate highly complex and detailed information often in extremely difficult circumstances, using negotiation and diplomacy.
