Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and ambitious part-time (4 days per week) Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Hospital Beckton and provide senior medical cover care to 15 inpatients on Upping Ward (Intensive Support Service for women with a diagnosis of personality disorder and complex mental health needs.)

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients as required and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward and ensuring their good quality in accordance to GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

The post holder will also be Deputy Medical Director at Cygnet Hospital Beckton - 58-bed gender specific hospital for women with complex mental health needs.

In this role, you'll combine clinical expertise with sound strategic acumen and inspiring leadership to oversee the delivery of the very best care whilst fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologist and occupational therapist.

You'll also have the opportunity to progress to Medical Director Level through our management schemes.

Main duties of the job

Cygnet Hospital Beckton is rated Good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) with inspectors praising staff for their safe, person-centred care.

The hospital has four different specialist wards including PICU, acute admissions and personality disorder services. We accept emergency and planned, pre-assessed admissions. Our aim is to support individual service user recovery and integration back into the community, as quickly as possible.We have a multi-disciplinary team of specialists and offer a very broad range of therapies.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and have overall medical responsibility of patient treatment plans, whilst liaising closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers etc.)

The post holder will be expected to act as a positive role model, maintaining and demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and other staff.

All our patients are NHS patients. This role would be suitable for anyone who would like to continue working in the NHS in a part-time role and would like to explore opportunities in an independent sector.

Your role responsibilities

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT)
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the MDT
  • Assess referrals & undertake mental state examinations of service users
  • Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis & treatment
  • Participate in ward rounds & clinical audits
  • Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management & embed clinical governance
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals & managers hearings & attend hearings
  • Participate in the 1:6 on-call rota

We are looking for someone who is...

  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified
  • Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC Status
  • Experienced & knowledgeable in adult psychiatry & mental health diagnosis
  • Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, along with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity
  • A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes
  • Committed to continued professional development
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • A member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent

Successful candidates will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
