Job summary

We have a number of positions available, both part time & full time, working under the direct supervision of the senior clinicians and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols and within the scope of their practice, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team

Main duties of the job

1. You will obtain venous or capillary blood samples from patients in accordance with the Trust guidelines and you may be required to work on specialised units eg SCBU after suitable training and experience.

2. You will conduct the procedure, whilst ensuring an awareness and regard for individual patient needs.

3. You will approach the patient with courtesy and give appropriate explanation of the procedure.

4. To obtain verbal consent where possible.

5. Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.

6. To adhere to written phlebotomy guidelines and health and safety guidelines in all aspects of the job role.

7. Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources and maintain equipment ready for use.

8. Work collaboratively with others in the Ward/Dept to ensure that patients needs are met 9. All employees of the Trust have the responsibility to comply with the Trusts Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures at all times. Strict adherence to effective hand hygiene is essential

- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures on patients of all ages

- Ensure patient comfort and safety during blood collection procedures

- Label and process blood samples accurately and efficiently

- Maintain cleanliness and sterility of equipment and work area

- Maintain proper documentation and patient records

- Collaborate with medical staff to ensure timely and accurate specimen collection

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • - High school diploma or equivalent
  • - Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program
  • - Relevant certification (e.g., ASCP, NHA) preferred
  • - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • - Ability to work well in a fast-paced healthcare environment
  • - Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
