An exciting opportunity has become available for a Lead Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our inspiring Adults Services Team here at Keech Hospice Care. As a Lead Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will be pivotal in managing our 8-bed inpatient unit and outpatient service; this is primarily based in our Wellbeing Centre, but there may be occasions where support is required at our Bedford site.

We are looking for an innovative and enthusiastic individual with the ability to think creatively in terms of service and staff development, to help us meet the changing demands for palliative and end of life care.

The Lead Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist will collaborate with senior colleagues both within the hospice and with external services, maximising how our resources are used to help care and support as many patients and their loved ones as possible.

Main duties of the job

  • Strong leadership in managing professional nursing issues and an inspirational role model for positive practice
  • Line manage the integrated Adult Services non-medical clinical team covering both inpatient and outpatient services, ensuring policy compliance in meetings, assessments, and reviews
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the inpatient unit and Wellbeing Centre, managing resources within budget constraints
  • Provide developmental support to clinical teams adapting to a changing environment
  • Demonstrate Advanced Nursing Practice, autonomously assessing, prescribing, and evaluating plans of care, recognising when to access the expertise of the wider healthcare team
  • Strengthen the wider nursing agenda at Keech Hospice Care through education and training
  • Support career pathways for non-medical clinicians and promote evidence-based practice and nursing research within the multidisciplinary team
  • Proactively identify personal development needs
  • Serve as a resource and support for non-medical prescribers, ensuring compliance with updates
  • Create a culture of continuous learning for all clinicians while ensuring evidence-based service developments

Job responsibilities

This is an exciting time for Keech Hospice Care (KHC) as we redesign and develop our adult service offering.

You will provide strong clinical leadership to the adult services team within KHC and take an active role in collaborating with external stakeholders to provide palliative care for the people across Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes.

The post holder will carry out the core responsibilities as the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS):

Expert practice influencing patient outcomes and experience, as well as influencing the practice of other healthcare staff

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • NMC registration Adult Nursing Level 1
  • Educated to degree level
  • Experience of leadership and line management at Band 7 or above
  • Previous experience in a Hospice, oncology/community, or acute setting caring for patients at the end of life
  • Experience in specialist palliative care including symptom control management, theory and practice, and experience in prescribing
  • Advanced Clinical Assessment Skills Qualification
  • Active Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification

Desirable

  • Possessing or working towards a relevant qualification in palliative care
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the development of others in the field
  • Acquired skills in managing resources and operations effectively
  • Proven track record of leading or contributing to projects with tangible outcomes
  • Experience in conducting research or audit activities to enhance care delivery and outcomes
