Band 8C Clinical Scientist Section Lead in Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR)
Applicants should be HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist and certified MRSE or LPA.
An exciting opportunity is available for a senior, experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to lead the Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR) section and to join our friendly and expanding Radiation Protection Department team at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful applicant will work with a high degree of autonomy to lead and develop the NIR Section, and to deliver INIR physics services to RBFT.
NIR modalities supported include state-of-the-art MRI, ultrasound imaging, lasers, UV & blue light phototherapy and other EMF sources.
Opportunities for collaboration and research through the links with University of Reading are actively encouraged.
Due to the nature of the section's service delivery, a willingness to travel between sites in a timely manner is essential and the post holder should have a valid driving licence.
Main duties of the job
The NIR Section Lead will direct and manage a highly specialist scientific and technical service.This is a specialist role, with the freedom to initiate action within broad scientific principles.
The post holder will have advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of a wide range of INIR modalities, with sufficient knowledge, skill and experience to act as MR Safety Expert (MRSE) or laser protection adviser (LPA).
You will provide specialist scientific support and advice to medical, clinical, scientific and technical staff on highly complex issues and the interpretation of relevant guidance related to room design, performance testing and safety information.
The post holder will be encouraged to undertake research and development activities as required to improve the quality of service to patients, and keep abreast of new developments in their field. This will require close cooperation between a multidisciplinary team to ensure that patients receive the best medical care possible.
About us
The Radiation Protection Department sits within the growing Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate. Our role is to support the Trust and clients in ionising and non-ionising radiation protection and diagnostic radiology physics.
The section currently provides services to RBFT and a number of external organisations including: a large NHS Trust, several private hospitals and a community dental service across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.
Across all sites there are 8 1.5T and one 3T MR systems. An extensive expansion/replacement programme is nearing completion with two new MR systems (1.5T and 3T), providing state-of-the-art systems with substantial opportunities for service development and synergies with research programmes. There are multiple lasers.
The CQC recently rated the care provided by the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust as Good.

Qualifications
Essential
- Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject
- MSc and preferably a PhD in non-ionising physics or medical physics (or equivalent)
- Corporate Membership of IPEM
- Certified MRSE (MR Safety Expert) and/or LPA
Professional Registration

- State registration as a Clinical Scientist (HCPC registration)
Experience
Essential
- Expert and specialist knowledge and full understanding of all the areas of legislation, approved codes and good guidance, applicable to the use of non-ionising radiations in medical diagnosis or treatment, and biomedical research
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of the nature, use, risks and radiation protection of non-ionising radiation
- Extensive knowledge of the use of specialist physics testing equipment and procedures employed to measure the application, performance and safety of a wide variety of laser, MRI and ultrasound imaging and other non-ionising radiation equipment
- Wide experience of MRI clinical applications
- Experience in teaching and training various groups of staff across a range of medical physics, diagnostic radiology and radiation protection subject areas and organising courses modules at regional and national level
