Job summary

We are looking for an outstanding colleague to join our general paediatric team as a substantive consultant on 9 PA. You will be based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital with duties across sites. The post arises due to partial retirement and adjustment of duties, and we are especially interested in someone with special interest in respiratory paediatrics or cardiology or epilepsy.

Our paediatric department provides services across the Heartlands, Good Hope, and Solihull (HGS) sites, serving a diverse multi-ethnic population. We have a smaller assessment area and ward alongside L1 neonatal unit at Good Hope, a large ward with HDU alongside a busy assessment unit at Heartlands, with a separate L3 neonatal intensive care unit. Outpatient clinics are provided at Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull and the Chest Clinic. We have 2 consultants with epilepsy interest based primarily at GHH, 3 with cardiology interest, and 4 with respiratory interest. The respiratory team are supported by specialist nurses and other allied health professionals and provide general respiratory, NIV with neuromuscular services, sleep studies, LTOT, cystic fibrosis and non-CF bronchiectasis services. The epilepsy service is in the process of developing specialist nurse input, currently supported by our home-care nursing team.

Opportunities for teaching, service development, and research are encouraged. Any applicant must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of CCT.

Main duties of the job

Distribution of PA's

In principle the job plan will comprise a maximum of 9 PA's with breakdown as below.

*7.0 PA's - for Direct Clinical Care (including on calls & clinics)

*1.0 PA's for 'Supporting Professional Activities' to support annual appraisal & revalidation with General Medical Council including active involvement in departmental and Trust governance and Quality improvement process (e.g. reviewing and scoping of incidents, supporting investigation of incidents associated with moderate or severe harm, participation in departmental and national audits).

*1.0 PA flexible for DCC or other duties as agree with clinical service lead.

*We anticipate there will be opportunities to increase PA number if desired, after recruitment

Clinical work responsibilities (minimum 7.0 PA's per week)

The post holder will be mainly based at the Heartlands site but will be expected to be able to work at any of our Trust sites

*Out of hours on calls will be at Heartlands Hospital covering general paediatrics. Current frequency is approximately 1 in 12. This includes onsite presence until 21:00 hours (Mon -- Friday) and until 16.00 on weekends/bank holidays.

*Consultants work a 'Consultant of the week' pattern in all service areas. General Paediatrics ward work may be shared across the Heartlands and Good Hope sites.

*Outpatient activity (50-70 clinics per year) will be mainly at the Heartlands site but may be shared across the Good Hope and Solihull sites as required.

Job responsibilities

All consultants provide general paediatric services. This appointment looks for applicants with special interest in cardiology, epilepsy or respiratory disease.

Supporting responsibilities (1.0 core PA)

*Participation in teaching and training of junior staff and those in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate.

*Participation in regional acute paediatric training (RAPT) to maintain acute paediatric skills

*Research training, including GCP and clinical trial administration

*Participation in clinical governance activities including audits, and other supporting activities as directed by the needs of the service.

*Responding and engaging with any complaints or investigations within the trust

*Attending statutory, essential and mandatory training.

*Attending and keeping up to date with child safeguarding training as per trust requirements
