Job summary

The Trauma and Orthopaedic service comprises of 29 other Orthopaedic Consultants, with sub-specialties: Upper Limb, Foot and Ankle, Spine and Hip and Knee. With a further nine Associate Specialists and Specialty Doctors.

The appointee will work closely with the other five established Orthopaedic Spine Surgeons and the wider Orthopaedic team to support both elective and emergency spinal surgery.

We are a part of the regional spinal network of providers, linking with the complex spinal surgery unit at North Bristol Trust. The current spinal team are committed to the recent GIRFT spine report. The applicant will be expected to participate in the general orthopaedic on call rota.

In addition, the successful appointee will provide key input into the development of GHFT's plan to develop spinal services, with new day case spinal lists being ran out of Cheltenham General Hospital from March 2024.

This is a full-time post. However, any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.

Main duties of the job

We wish to appoint new Consultant colleague to join our expanding Spinal Surgery service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). This is a post to augment our current service with a view to starting immediately. The appointee will complement and develop the spinal surgery service, including the recent opening of spinal lists at the newly commissioned Cheltenham General Hospital Day Case Theatres. The post holder will work at both Gloucester Royal Hospital and at Cheltenham General Hospital to provide services across the county.This is a full-time post, with a 10 PA job plan (negotiable to 12 PAs).

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full General Medical Council registration.
  • On Specialist Register via: CCT or CESR-CP (Combined Programme) (proposed CCT/CESR-CP date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights
  • ATLS Provider

Desirable

  • Additional degree, diploma or postgraduate thesis relevant to the specialty

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • General training leading to an appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgical qualification
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on problems in Spinal Surgery
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on a range of both elective and emergency problems in spinal surgery
  • Expertise in elective spinal surgery and at least 2 years' experience in a specialist unit or equivalent including Fellowship training in spinal surgery
  • Validated logbook indicating adequate and appropriate level of specialist surgical operative experience

Desirable

  • Experience in advanced elective and trauma spinal surgery.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for day case spinal surgery
