Job summary

Solent NHS Trust is offering this exciting Consultant post in Community Paediatrics. This is a full time (10PA) post, but consideration would be given to applicants wanting to work a minimum of 6PA. The post includes responsibility for locality neurodevelopmental clinics in the New Forest, including a special school catering for a wide range of needs at primary, and SLD/PMLD at secondary level. It includes a lead role for postgraduate education. Other clinical responsibilities could be negotiated dependant on the skills and interest of the successful applicant. The post includes participation in the in-hours Child Protection rota with other senior doctors. Participation in the out-of-hours rota for forensic child sexual abuse will also be expected. This is currently 1:14 bank holidays and weekends 8.30am -- 6pm. The office base is at Adelaide Health Centre, Southampton.

Please note that there is also a 6PA post in the East being advertised. The post includes clinical responsibility for neurodevelopmental and neuro-disability clinics within South East Hampshire. There may also a requirement for cross cover across Portsmouth clinics in the future. The office base will be at Alpha Court, Segensworth, but will move to the new Fareham CDC when that is completed.

Main duties of the job

Coordinate the departmental provision for paediatric neurodevelopmental outpatient clinics in the New Forest, including the clinical supervision of trainees, specialty doctors and nurses providing these clinics.

Teach undergraduate medical students from the University of Southampton Medical School.

Provide educational supervision to core and grid paediatric trainees, Foundation doctors and GPVTS trainees as required (subject to training by Wessex Deanery and recognition by the GMC). Departmental lead role for postgraduate education.

Contribute to the child protection medical service for the assessment and management of children in whom abuse or neglect are suspected. This includes on-duty cover for acute assessment of both physical and sexual abuse on weekdays approximately 30 days per year, and a contribution to the weekend and bank holiday rota for assessment of alleged sexual abuse in prepubertal children approximately 1 in 10 weekends.

Depending on previous experience and special interests, there may be opportunities to deliver multidisciplinary feeding clinics, continence clinics, Looked After Children's clinics or general paediatric outpatient clinics.

Subject to approvals, the aim is for the new Trust to be formed by July 2024.Project Fusion is the name for the programme to create the new combined NHS Foundation Trust. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCPCH or equivalent.
  • Possession of the CCT in community paediatrics (or equivalent) or within 6 months of this at the time of the interview. Should be on the Specialist Register of the GMC.
  • Fully registered with GMC.

Desirable

  • MSc in Community Child Health
  • Other qualification in neurology, neurodisability or community child health
  • Teaching qualification
