Consultant Cellular Pathologist

An exciting opportunity exists for a whole-time consultant post in Cellular Pathology based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Woolwich, South East London, dealing with a very interesting and varied workload in a general setting. The successful candidate will be required to report surgical pathology and non-gynaecological cytopathology cases. Although this is a full-time post, applications from candidates wishing to work less than full time will be considered. Applicants should be in possession of the FRCPath (or equivalent) and must be fully registered with the GMC including entry on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will participate in a regular weekly rota of surgical pathology cut-up and reporting, as well as reporting of non-gynaecological cytopathology cases. There is no requirement to report gynaecological cytopathology cases. Post-mortem examinations are not performed. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings rota.

Clinical Responsibilities

This post is for 10 programmed activities (7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPA). Reporting is undertaken on a rota basis and the appointee will be expected to share equitably in surgical histopathology and non-gynaecological cytopathology work and in MDT meetings.

The appointee will be encouraged to participate in the management of the service.

The configuration of responsibilities will be reviewed from time to time and the appointee will be expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a reliable and expeditious service.

The major clinical specialties covered include general medical, general surgical, skin, lung, breast (not screening), urology (excluding resections), gynaecology, gastrointestinal and lymphoreticular. There is no requirement for participation in cervical screening cytopathology.

Performing autopsies is not a requirement.

The appointee will be expected to participate in the Regional General Histopathology EQA scheme, National Breast Cancer Screening EQA scheme and other EQA schemes as appropriate.

Compliance with the requirements of good clinical governance and any new national arrangements for medical recertification will be expected.

The list of duties given is not an exhaustive list and the post holder may be asked to undertake other duties in line with this grade of post as may be required by the Clinical Director from time to time.

Medical Education & Teaching

The department currently has two specialty doctors who are working towards completing their CESR portfolios in order to ultimately apply for substantive posts. They have been closely supervised and mentored throughout their time here, both by the head of Department and other consultant colleagues. The department has a nurturing ethos towards staff development, and all staff, especially consultants, are encouraged to provide regular teaching and training to those in need.

There is currently no requirement to teach undergraduate students from the medical school at Guys, Kings and St Thomas.

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

The Trust has a well-developed Clinical Governance strategy and all clinical services in the Trust have a Clinical Governance group and a rolling programme of half days set aside for Clinical Audit. Clinical Risk strategies are being developed with cross-service working where appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register
