Job summary

The Department of Respiratory Medicine is seeking two full-time (10 PA) Consultants to join the dynamic, enthusiastic and forward-thinking Lung cancer and Pleural teams.

The established and highly successful multidisciplinary thoracic cancers team at KHP provides diagnostic and therapeutic services to the local community, south east London and beyond. The purpose of the service is to ensure that local patients with suspected lung and other thoracic cancers are reviewed rapidly, experience high value collaborative and coordinated care wherever they need it. The guiding principles are right care and value-based healthcare.

This post is funded by GSTT and offers an excellent opportunity to join a first-class team working to deliver innovative pathways of care for the local respiratory population in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment, which is part of a wider Academic Health Sciences Centre.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for providing consultant review for both inpatients and outpatients with suspected lung cancer and pleural disease. The post holder will be expected to work closely with the acute oncology and rapid diagnostic cancer service to improve management of patients with suspected/known lung cancer or malignant pleural disease admitted to acute wards at GSTT.

About us

The Directorate of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care and Sleep based at Guy's and St Thomas' (forming part of the GSTTHeart Lung and Critical Care Clinical Group) is committed to delivering excellent patient care whilst meeting the Government targets.

A body of 20 Respiratory consultants also contribute to the care of general medical and high-dependency patients. The Lung cancer team currently includes Prof George Santis (KCL appointment), Dr Kimuli Ryanna (consultant physician at GSTT), 3 lung cancer clinical nurse specialists. Respiratory medicine has a close relationship with the GSTT Pathology service that provides expert pathology support for the EBUS service.

The Pleural team currently comprises Dr Owais Kadwani (consultant physician and pleural lead at GSTT), one pleural fellow, a pleural nurse specialist and a thoracic surgeon; providing a comprehensive, state-of-the-art service for patients with pleural disease. The service is further supported by excellent radiology and histopathology departments. We run five day a week pleural lists, a joint physician/surgical pleural disease clinic and thoracoscopy lists., supported by a weekly MDM.

2WW clinics are currently held at the Guy's Cancer Centre and St Thomas' Hospital. Bronchoscopy/EBUS lists are held at St Thomas' Hospital. Pleural clinics are currently held at St Thomas' Hospital . Currently, there is also a daily pleural list and weekly MDM.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The job plan is anticipated to contain 10 Programmed Activities per week on average to becarried out on Guys & St Thomas sites and includes on-call commitments. This is an outline programme, and the post holder will be expected to discuss and agree on a detailed job plan, including personal and professional objectives with the Clinical Director within 3 months of the start date.

The job plan will be negotiated between the consultant and his/her clinical director at least annually. Clinic templates depend on patient complexity in sub-specialty clinics; for General Respiratory clinics a template of 4 New patients and 6 Follow up appointments is expected per session.

The post also includes a commitment to acute medicine in the form of a slot on the acute medicine (on take) rota working alongside the Acute Medicine consultant team and the GIM/respiratory rota (inpatient care of patients on William Gull ward). The acute medicine (on take) rota is a 1:24 with split weekends and includes weekend inpatient cover, with time in lieu given for weekend working.

Professional Qualifications

Essential

  • Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise.
  • On GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining CCT in Respiratory medicine and General Internal Medicine.

Desirable

  • PhD, MD

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Comprehensive clinical experience in respiratory, G(I) M, lung cancer and pleural disease

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Competent in bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS-TBNA), thoracic ultrasound, and pleural procedures

Desirable

  • Thoracoscopy experience

Audit, Governance & IT

Essential

  • Understanding of principles of the audit
  • Evidence of training in management

Desirable

  • Evidence of completion of QI and audit projects

Research. Teaching skill & experience

Essential

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff
