Job summary

A sort after exciting opportunity to become a Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist (RCNS) in a well-established integrated multi professional Respiratory speciality, for chronic airways disease (COPD), asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease and home oxygen prescribing service at Good Hope Hospital.

This RCNS role is a vital link in supporting the patient to go home from hospital sooner, working in partnership with the local community teams, who support patients who would otherwise be in hospital.

The post holder will be supported by more experienced RCNS nurses to enable them to achieve competence and knowledge which will support the provision of a seamless specialist service; ensuring patients receive the highest standard of clinical care.

Specialist RCNS knowledge and skills, will be demonstrated though the provision of assessment, treatment pathways, diagnostic results, advice, education, and support to staff, patients, their families, and carers.

The post holder's successful completion of the RCNS competences will enable him/her to become an autonomous clinical practitioner within the scope of practice for a Band 6 Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Main duties of the job

Registered Nurse on the NMC Register

Evidence of post registration CPD / Post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses at Level 6

Where required for the role willingness to undertake training and education to support the role of specialist practice in COPD, Asthma, Oxygen prescriber and non-medical prescriber.

Experience

Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC.

Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development/ competence.

Experience and enthusiasm for teaching / assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting.

Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment.

Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student learning.

Desirable

Significant post registration experience. with evidence of passion/ enthusiasm and knowledge for respiratory as a specialism.

Experience in service development.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register
  • Accurately record clinical data and understand its significance e.g. heart rate and rhythm, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, peak flow rate, blood pressure.
  • Mentoring qualification

Desirable

  • Health care management / leadership qualification
  • Post registration respiratory nursing qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Relevant Band 5 respiratory medicine experience
  • Experience in COPD /Asthma care
  • Able to assess and train.
  • inhaler technique to patients, carers and other Health Care Professionals.
  • Experience in administering oxygen adhering to local and national guidelines.
  • Wiliness to complete recognised respiratory post graduate education level 6 or above.
  • Professional Portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
  • Can demonstrate understanding / experience / in practice-based supervision / assessment as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • Evidence of effective multi-professional working.
  • Experience of being a mentor
  • Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice
  • Advanced knowledge of caring for patients with acute/long term chronic lung disease

Desirable

  • Working in outpatient clinical setting
  • Experience in palliative care field
  • Awareness and implementation of evidence-based guidelines.
  • Substantial relevant and recent clinical experience within a health care setting or Acute NHS setting working as a deputy Band 6 position including the supervision and education of junior staff/ students.

  • Demonstrable understanding of the management responsibility/resources associated with the clinical service.

  • Knowledge of Quilaty improvement, National auditing for COPD/Asthma
