Job summary

This post is designed to provide sub-specialty training in Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) and would suit a doctor with 7 complete years of postgraduate training (equivalent if overseas) or post-CCT seeking further exposure to complex radiotherapy techniques as well as advanced clinical oncology training prior to becoming a consultant clinical oncologist.

The postholder will have exposure to the established SABR and SRS services and also newer sites for SABR techniques including cardiac and prostate SABR.

The postholder will be expected to carry out research and audit projects and will be encouraged to present them in national and international meetings as well as mentoring and teaching of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist in the provision of high quality care for patients with a range of malignancies, with special emphasis on those where SABR/SRS is a modality of treatment.
  • To contribute to clinical SABR/SRS service delivery.
  • To develop independent proficiency in SABR/SRS.
  • To participate in ongoing SABR/SRS research and development.
  • To maintain collection and review of data of patients treated with SABR, including radiotherapy dosimetry and outcome measures such as Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and patient experience.
  • To contribute to the department's record in producing national and international peer-reviewed work.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and update of SABR/SRS clinical protocols.
  • To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care and to contribute to service developments.
  • To take part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be involved in MDTs and clinics where referrals for SABR and SRS are discussed. They will have radiotherapy planning sessions and contribute to radiotherapy peer review meetings. An outline including MDT and radiotherapy peer review meetings are shown below. The post holder will have the opportunity to discuss how to shape the timetable to provide adequate time for radiotherapy planning (which may include time with Radiotherapy Physics) and research and development.

The postholder will participate in a ward based cover system approximately four weeks per 12 months. The postholder may be asked to contribute to bleep cover during national ST training days (two to three days per year).

  • Full GMC registration

Qualifications / Education

  • 7 complete years of postgraduate medical training, or equivalent if overseas
  • FRCR Part 2 or equivalent
  • IELTS exam pass result at time of application (if applicable)

Clinical expertise in speciality/sub-speciality

  • High level of clinical and radiotherapy expertise in the full range of clinical oncology disciplines.

Desirable

  • Some personal experience in SABR/SRS
  • Evidence of a course on advanced radiotherapy techniques
