Applications are invited for the post of NHS Locum Consultant in Medical Microbiology to work in our Trust. London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust is one of the largest integrated care Trusts in the country bringing together hospital and community services across the boroughs of Brent, Harrow and Ealing. Our 9,000 staff, including 1,300 doctors and 4,000 nurses and serves a diverse population of approximately 850,000. The Trust was established in October 2014 following the merger of The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust and Ealing Hospital NHS Trust and has an annual budget of over £640 million.

Microbiology laboratory services for the Trust are currently provided at the Northwick Park Hospital site by The Doctors' Laboratory (TDL). The laboratory has full UKAS accreditation.

The Microbiology department has close working relationship with infectious diseases departments at Northwick Park and Ealing Hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and clinically focused NHS Locum Consultant with experience in clinical microbiology and antimicrobial stewardship in the UK. He or she will join the Microbiology team of 3.5 Consultants, 0.6 WTE Associate Specialist and 2.0 WTE Specialty Doctors to provide clinical microbiology service across the Trust's hospital sites (Northwick Park, St Marks, Ealing and Central Middlesex Hospitals) and the local communities. There is an opportunity to take part in out-patient activities of the Infectious Diseases department (1 PA a week). It is expected that the appointee will be responsible for antimicrobial stewardship at Ealing Hospital.

Job responsibilities

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To work closely with the colleagues and the Infection Control Team in the management of patients.

To carry out duties assigned by senior colleagues.

To ensure that the process of producing the information contained in a Pathology report is carried out to the required professional standard.

To provide clinical advice to clinicians.

To enable and participate in clinical audit.

To participate in and contribute towards infection control matters including the Infection Control Committee meetings and Antibiotic Committee meetings and antimicrobial

To participate in appropriate teaching, training, and research and development stewardship.

To establish and maintain close liaison with all clinical departments within the hospital and to participate in meetings, ward rounds, audit etc as necessary to provide a high quality and effective clinical microbiology service.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Post Graduate qualification in Medical Microbiology
  • GMC registration

Desirable

  • MRCP, MSc Medical Microbiology, MD, PhD or equivalent

skills and experience

Essential

  • Previous relevant experience of working in a clinical microbiology department in an NHS Hospital in the UK for at least one year.
  • IT Skills and computer literacy
  • Broad based training in microbiology and virology and its subspecialties
  • Broad based general professional training in general medicine

Desirable

  • NHS experience within the last 3 years
