Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Nephrology within the Nephrology & Transplant department at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

The Nephrology and Transplant Directorate serves a population of approximately 1.4 million people in South East Wales, providing a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including dialysis and transplantation. Transplantation is also provided for patients from West Wales - an additional 0.8 million population. The take-on rate for Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) is more than 140 per million population per year. The rate for kidney transplantation (including combined kidney pancreas) exceeds 69 per million population per year.

Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £105,401 per annum.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work closely with Consultant colleagues as well as a broad multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality nephrology services to our patients.

The David Thomas Haemodialysis Unit at University Hospital of Wales has recently been extensively refurbished, and has capacity for 28 patients per week. The Unit focuses on caring for inpatients at UHW with non-renal problems, as well as outpatients with complex needs requiring specific care only available in an in-hospital setting.

The Directorate runs an active Home Therapies programme, and currently manages approximately 65 patients receiving Peritoneal Dialysis therapies, and approximately 40 patients receiving Home Haemodialysis. This area of care is a focus for development and expansion in the Directorate's current strategy.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
