Buckinghamshire Priority Dental Service (BPDS) is looking for enthusiastic and conscientious dentists with excellent interpersonal skills and interests in all fields of dentistry. You will be joining a team that is responding to change, redesigning services, committed to a patient-focused NHS and developing innovative solutions to improved access and oral health. BPDS has a dynamic team that includes Specialists, Dental Therapists, and Dental Core Trainees.

The post holder will have full registration with the GDC. The post will involve providing dental care to people of all ages including those with special needs, physical disabilities and other priority groups. This will include: treatment under inhalation sedation, providing domiciliary care, and the treatment of patients in prison/secure units. The postholder may also be involved in treatment under IV sedation, general anesthesia and providing epidemiology fieldwork. Opportunities may be available to be involved in the training of junior staff such as a Dental Core Trainee.

Main duties of the job

Obtain and verify a complete medical history for all patients

Obtain informed, valid consent for all invasive dental procedures, including the taking of radiographs, from the patient or an adult with parental authority and give a treatment plan

Record all aspects of clinical examination, relevant medical history and treatment on the computerised patient management system provided.

Complete all computerised and written records necessary for the reporting of clinical activity and to ensure the collection of all patient charges due.

Only prescribe appropriate medication from the dental formulary

Follow all elements of the CNWL Clinical Governance policies. Particular emphasis is placed on those relating to cross infection control, Health & Safety, patient confidentiality and data protection. All radiographs should be justified, reported and an appropriate recording made in the radiograph log book to maintain radiographic quality assurance.

Participate in clinical audit and peer review programmes relating to activity undertaken for the Dental Service.

Undertake not to divulge to any third parties information relating to security access to the building, rooms, equipment and monies, as well as the Dental Service telephone numbers at the clinic.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)
  • Full registration with the GDC
  • NHS Performer number

Experience

Essential

  • Current or recent experience working as a dentist with clinical commitment in hospital, salaried or general dental service
  • Ability to diagnose, manage and treat urgent dental problems for both children and adults

Desirable

  • Clerical experience of using dental software packages.
  • Previous experience in working for urgent care dental services
  • Understanding of telephone triage
  • Previous experience in carrying out remote telephone and video consultations
  • Able to supervise trainees and unqualified staff
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care under general anaesthesia
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care under inhalation sedation
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care on a domiciliary basis

Knowledge

  • Demonstrable knowledge of cross infection control standards
