Job summary

This position is a whole time (10 PA), or maximum part time, replacement Fixed Term Consultant General Surgeon with Interest in Colorectal Surgery appointment for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. There is the option of additional PA's in agreement with the successful candidate. However, any additional PA's will be reviewed annually through the job planning process.

If the person appointed elects to undertake a maximum part time contract, he / she will be required to devote substantially the whole of his / her professional time to the duties of the post and to give them priority at all times.

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

This is a Consultant based service and the Consultant will have continuing responsibility for the patients in his/her charge and to assist in the proper functioning of the department. He/she will be responsible for the pre-operative counselling, assessment and investigations, the surgery, post-operative inpatient care and outpatient review.

Job responsibilities

The appointee will provide a General & Colorectal Surgical Service at Lincoln and Associated Hospitals and contribute to the comprehensive countywide Colorectal Surgical Service for the population of Lincolnshire in accordance with the agreed Cancer Centre standards.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • An appropriate higher surgical qualification

Desirable

  • FRCS

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to teach and work with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Understanding of the needs of Trainees Willingness to work as a member of the team and to share administrative responsibilities
  • Understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance

Desirable

  • Willingness to organise relevant audit activities
  • Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in Colorectal Surgery
  • Experience in performing lower GI endoscopies
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the speciality

Desirable

  • Familiarity with issues of service, organisation and development Knowledge of the utilisation of IT in clinical practice
