Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon with a Special interest in Burns, at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. This is a full-time post for one year and to start as soon as possible.

The post holder will work as one of a team of Consultant Burns Surgeons, covering the Regional Burns Service in the Midlands. The adult burns centre is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. Paediatric burns management takes place at the Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham opened in June 2010 and has 1250 beds, providing secondary care to its local population and tertiary care to the West Midlands, the wider community and neighbouring counties. This provides state of the art operating theatres, a 100-bedded critical care department, excellent radiology support and first class in-and-out-patient facilities. The Centre for Defence Medicine is based in the hospital and is the main receiving hospital for the British military casualties from conflict areas around the world. From April 2012, QEHB has functioned as a Level 1 Trauma Centre receiving major civilian trauma from the West Midlands and neighbouring counties.

Main duties of the job

The Burns Centre has 15 purpose built single occupancy rooms including 6 HDU beds. The Centre is adjacent to the ITU and the operating theatres.

Burns and Plastic Surgery is a separate speciality within CDG9 Queen Elizabeth Hospital, CDG 9 Medical Director Mr Nigel Suggett, Burns Clinical Lead is Mr Azzam Farroha.

Specialist burns fellowship (6 months minimum) covering both adult and paediatric burns at post CCT/CESR level or at senior level post FRCS Plastic

Wide experience in total burn care, at a senior level in the NHS including surgical and non-surgical management of complex and major burns, both acute care and long term reconstruction

Experience in general plastic surgery

Job responsibilities

The post holders will become an integral part of the Burns MDT Team. You will join a well-established and active team of burn surgeons who work across both hospital sites to provide care in both the Paediatric and Adult Burn Centres in Birmingham, as part of the Midlands Burn Operational Delivery Network.

The Job Plan will comprise of 10 programmed activities. This include burns on-call (1:6). The job plan will be subject to the needs of the service and experience of the successful candidate. The final time table will be constructed following discussion with the successful candidate and will result in an agreed job plan. The job plan will be mainly in burns, but there will some opportunity to general plastic surgery and laser therapy.

The appointee will participate in the 1:6 burns on call rota covering the adult burns centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the paediatric burns centre at Birmingham Children Hospital Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council GMC, with license to practice.
  • FRCS(Plast) or equivalent
  • On the GMC Specialist Registration in Plastic Surgery. Or CCT in plastic surgery within 6 months at time of interview.
