Portsmouth Hospital Trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country treating over half a million patients each year. Our purpose-built Haematology-Oncology Centre is situated in Queen Alexandra Hospital. Combined Haematology/ Oncology (CHOC) is a 46-bed unit on one floor across 3 wards (F5, F6 and F7). Haematology-Oncology Day Unit (HODU) is staffed by 13 full and part-time trained chemotherapy nurses and treat approximately 80 - 90 patients per day. Our Acute Oncology Service (AOS) has six dedicated acute oncology assessment and treatment beds for patients presenting with complications from cancer treatment and the management of acute/emergency cancer symptoms. This service was commended in Quality in Care - Oncology Excellence Awards in 2013. Radiotherapy equipment includes 4 Varian Linear accelerators all with 6 and 10 MV photons and a range of electron energies. The Clinical Oncology Department at Queen Alexandra Hospital offers a wide range of specialised radiotherapy techniques including; IMRT, IGRT, VMAT, 4D-RT, HDR brachytherapy, LDR seed brachytherapy. Other Treatment Equipment includes a dual energy 250kv and 80-120kv Gulmay machine and a Toshiba CT simulator. All Linear Accelerators are currently being replaced by Varian TrueBeam linacs. Main duties of the job

This is an opportunity for 2 full-time Specialty Trust Grade (Registrar) posts; 1 in Clinical Oncology and 1 in Medical Oncology. The appointee(s) will work together with 9+ other Clinical and Medical Oncology ST3+ trainees rotating through attachments of 6 months covering a range of tumour types. The post holder(s) will be required to demonstrate that they have experience in oncological management, and preferably will have MRCP or equivalent. The posts may be attractive to candidates who have completed Foundation and Core Medical competencies (or equivalent) and wish to gain further experience in either Clinical Oncology or Medical Oncology before pursing ST3 training, or those who wish to work towards attainment of FRCR outside of a training program, or for those working towards CESR in either specialty. Although this is a non-training post, the successful candidate(s) will be assigned a consultant educational supervisor and will be encouraged to maintain an educational portfolio with appropriate assessments to their level of experience. There are regular educational, clinical governance and departmental meetings, as well as Wessex Regional Oncology study days. The department is committed to clinical research with participation in clinical trials in all major tumour sub-sites. There are also a wide range of opportunities to participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects. 1 or 2 year fixed term post, with the opportunity for further extension.

Key Responsibilities: Provide Registrar level day to day care for oncology in-patients, together with ward rounds with the consultants Attend Oncology clinics Participate in the Registrar of the Week rota (~1 in 10) Participate in the Oncology Registrar on-call rota (~1 in 10 weekends, Saturday & Sunday 0900 - 2100) Provide day to day clinical supervision of junior doctors in Oncology Participation in MDT meetings Provision of clinical support to oncology clinical nurse specialists Co-ordinate and implement specialist care for patients with a new diagnosis of cancer or complications of cancer, initiate rapid referral to relevant oncology sub-site team and/or palliative care team. Supervise and assist Acute Oncology Team Participate in recruitment and management of patients into Clinical Trials Provide medical support for Haematology/ Oncology Day Unit Achieve basic competencies in Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment prescribing and demonstrate progress Achieve basic competencies in Radiotherapy treatment planning and delivery, and demonstrate progress Teaching experience through the junior doctor induction and education programme, journal club, and opportunities to teach on MRCP programmes within the Trust Management and Leadership roles through participation in Chemotherapy Governance Group, Research Trial Protocol meetings, monthly Mortality/ Morbidity meetings Audit and Clinical Governance Undergo regular appraisal throughout the post Attend Trust educational and departmental meetings. Demonstrate awareness of national and local guidelines relating to specialty (e.g. NICE guidelines) and influence care developments in accordance with these. Identify, contribute to or lead on aspects in the development and dissemination of evidence-based guidelines, standards and protocols as required and implement change to improve the quality of patient care. Attend local, regional and national networks/meetings Present at seminars/conferences/meetings

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Primary medical qualification recognised by the GMC.

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of completion of Foundational level or Equivalent 2 year training programme.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, skills and experience in Oncology.
