Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to work as a key member of our friendly team of Dietitians in the West Dorset Integrated Acute & Community DietitiansService based at Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester (DCH).

We providecommunity services to north and west Dorset and are recruiting a Band 6 Community Dietitian as a permanent member of our supportive team. Full-time hours are available, part-time and flexible working will be considered. You will be a vital resource to the area, providing scheduled clinics, patient/staff education sessions as well as responding creatively to ad-hoc requests, recommending service improvements, representing the Department and promoting the Profession; all with patients as the priority.

You will be a key member of the department that provides a wide range of dietetic services across community settings. Covering a wide geographical area which includes both rural and seaside living, we are pushing the boundaries of virtual service delivery, using technology to creatively deliver some our services . You will be part of a Dietetic Department of 30 dietetic, nurses and admin staff based at DCH and you will have easy access to them for peer and senior support. You will also build professional relationships with yourcommunity colleagues in GP surgeries, and community hospitals.

You will have regular support from your line manager, who will help you develop your skills. We encourage and prioritise a full programme of CPD.

Main duties of the job

As an autonomous HCPC registered Dietitian, to provide evidence-based Dietetic Services to patients of Dorset in a community setting.

Deliver education and training on nutrition-related topics to a range of health and care professionals, students, and patients.

Act as a source of expertise in nutrition and diet therapy, advising medical staff and other health professionals.

Act as the lead for one or more clinical specialties (e.g. gastroenterology, cancer, nutrition support) ensuring skills are maintained through training and CPD opportunities.

Work as part of the overall dietetics team in the promotion of a quality and patient-focused service and development of the profession.

Act as the primary resource and point of dietetic expertise regarding nutrition for members of the primary care team within the area covered.

Work across community locations, including domiciliary visits, care homes and community hospitals

Work flexibly, across multiple office workspaces and from home using telephone and various digital platforms to deliver services safely in compliance with evolving social distancing guidance

Engage with other service providers to achieve integrated working.

Independently manage the allocated workload, alerting the Line Manager to development opportunities, inefficiencies, or problems.

Person Specification

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential

  • BSc in Human Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent qualification.
  • Current registered Dietitian status with HCPC.

Desirable

  • Basic training in communication and behaviour change.
  • Teaching qualification or experience of delivering education to groups.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Minimum 18 months post-qualification experience
  • Wide ranging clinical dietetic experience.
  • Evidence of knowledge in the field of nutritional support and chronic disease related conditions.
  • Experience in training other health professionals.
  • Experience facilitating patient group education
  • Demonstrable maintenance of up to date and relevant skills, abilities & knowledge.

Desirable

  • Experience of working as part of an MDT and with external agencies.
  • An understanding of how to carry out audit.
  • Experience of working with the principles of project management
  • Experience of producing dietetic resources e.g. a diet sheet.
  • Experience of lone working.

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Good understanding of this role, as per the job description.
  • Detailed knowledge of common clinical conditions and best dietetic management within a UK setting.
  • Good knowledge of dietary and influencing factors relevant to malnutrition, care of the elderly, dementia and end of life care
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work alone and as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Competent written communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to use initiative but recognise limits.
  • Evidence of time management skills, ability to prioritise work, complete projects and meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of clinical governance as it relates to dietetic practice.
  • Understanding of confidentiality as it relates to dietetic practice.
  • Evidence of ability to act as a mentor to student Dietitian.
  • Car driver or otherwise able to travel without reliance on public transport.
  • A working knowledge of computer systems and associated packages.
