Job summary

  • Is responsible to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and the Chief Executive of the Trust and, contributes to the statutory and mandatory duties of the Trust, helping to set and implement the strategic direction and contributing to improving the quality of service provided and the financial wellbeing of the Trust.
  • Will be responsible to the CMO for delivering high quality care within the resources available, working with divisional and corporate leads.
  • Will support the CMO in the development of a framework to ensure a strong infrastructure of medical leadership within the Trust, including the development of a competency framework to drive succession planning.
  • Is responsible for continuous improvement and innovation. This will involve actively assessing national and regional initiatives, new technological developments, and research to ensure safe, modern and effective care is delivered.
  • Will provide clinical leadership to Trust and wider health community for quality improvement projects.
  • Will co-ordinate the implementation of agreed patient safety priority projects and monitoring systems, as endorsed by the Executive Directors, within the wider clinical and social care governance arrangements of the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Will review and monitor the impact of patient safety initiatives.
  • Will be assigned to leadership and development to either the Derbyshire and Staffordshire ICS, to support the Chief Medical Officer. The Deputy MD will represent UHDB at system meetings and work with Executive and Deputy colleagues accordingly.
  • Will manage several strategic and cross-divisional workstreams on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer. Each Deputy Medical Director will be aligned to the site deputy triumvirate at RDH and QHB and work closely with Deputy Chief Nursing and Deputy Chief Operating Officer colleagues regarding site-specific issues.
  • Will assume the role of the Deputy Responsible Officer for Medical and Dental employees at UHDB following a period of induction and education and be part of the team for managing professional conduct of Medical and dental employees in line with national and local guidance.
  • Will provide medical advice on governance issues, ensuring effective local systems and policies and procedures are in place for governance in relation to:
    • Clinical risk management
    • Critical incident reporting, investigations, and monitoring
    • Professional performance
    • Research and development

Leadership and management development are core to the role and will be supported by the Chief Medical Officer to apply for external courses.
