Job summary

Applications are invited for a Full Time Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working across our two sites, Luton & Dunstable Hospital and Bedford Hospital. This appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract.

A background in Head & Neck Cancer Surgery with reconstruction & be proficient in raising the common types of free flaps as well as in micro-vascular surgery, without supervision, is essential.

Luton & Dunstable Hospital is the hub for an OMFS network covering Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes & North & East Herts. This post is based at Bedford Hospital, with designated sessions at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Though rare, there may on occasion be a requirement to work on other sites within the Network.

Weekly work commitments will be within EWTD guidance & also be influenced by the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial recommendations, the Consultant contract & will be specified in the Job Plan.

The appointee will participate in a 1:8 on call commitment based at Luton & Dunstable Hospital and will participate in the 1:4 flap rota.

The Clinical Director will encourage the member to be part of the New Consultant Forum of the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons & will also help to choose a mentor within the Trust but outside the department.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will join a friendly team of 8 Consultant OMF Surgeons within the Beds, Herts & Bucks OMFS network, providing services for Luton & Dunstable Hospital, Bedford Hospital, Lister Hospital, QEII Hospital & Milton Keynes Hospital.

The post-holder will be competent in assessing & carrying out the full range of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. All in-patient services & on-call duties have been centralised to Luton Hospital. Out-patient clinics, day case surgery & local anaesthetic minor oral surgery are undertaken in all of the units.

OMFS at Bedford Hospital has day surgery lists in Tavistock ward. The clinical team is fully supported by a team of highly trained dental nurses & maxillofacial/orthodontic technologists.

We are fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate medical students and post graduate doctors and have an excellent reputation for junior staff training.

Both hospitals have easy access to central London & the rural Chilterns. Excellent schools are found nearby. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes' drive from Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

Travel between hospital sites may be required.Residence is required within ten miles by road of the hospital.

Registration

Essential

  • Full and Specialist GMC registration with a license to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)
  • A registrable qualification with the UK GDC or eligibility to enter it within 6 months at the time of interview

Qualification

  • MBBS or evidence of equivalent qualification
  • BDS or equivalent
  • FRCS (OMFS) or equivalent

Desirable

  • Medical and Dental Degree
  • Post graduate qualification MSc, MD, PhD, MA, Masters in Education

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)
  • Experience in the management, treatment and reconstruction of Head and Neck Malignancy
  • Experience in Surgical Dermatology

Desirable

  • Record of regular attendance at national speciality meetings in OMFS
  • Evidence of sub-speciality training or fellowship out of region
