Job summary

We are seeking an ambitious and innovative Locum Critical Care Consultant to complement our diverse and dynamic group of Consultants at Peterborough City Hospital. We welcome both dual and single CCT applicants.

Our current team includes Consultants dualling with Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine and Respiratory Medicine.

North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust provides Acute Care services to a growing catchment area of over 850,000 residents living in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and the neighbouring counties of Norfolk and Bedfordshire.

We run three busy acute hospitals in Peterborough, Huntingdon and Stamford within easy commute from the East of England and London. Together with our system partners across East Anglia, we developed strong research collaboration links to implement evidence-based practices in improving the healthcare outcomes.

Our light and airy, purpose-built, 16 bedded mixed Level 2 and Level 3 Critical Care Unit caters for around 800 admissions each year. You would be working as part of a friendly and supportive multidisciplinary team which includes Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Speech and Language Therapists, Critical Care Outreach Practitioners and Clinical Psychologists.

Main duties of the job

Junior medical cover is provided by two tiers and a mix of trainees from FY1 to Stage 3 ICM and includes trainees from ICM, Anaesthesia, Medicine and ACCS training programmes. There is an additional senior tier of anaesthesia support available if required.

We have a strong interest in Ultrasound and Echocardiography as a unit and support a Stage 2 ICM Special Study Year in Echocardiography. The Critical Care Consultants support a 24/7 Critical Care Outreach Team and also run regular ICU follow up clinics.

We submit data to the Case Mix Programme Database and robust multi-disciplinary team Clinical Governance meetings are held monthly; contributions are encouraged from the whole MDT. Our unit is well represented regionally and nationally; examiners for ICM, EM, Anaesthesia and PHEM; Deputy RA; TPDs, and roles with the RCOA and Association of Anaesthetists. We are committed to research and innovation. Our Critical Care Unit is actively involved in clinical research and has participated in several National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) portfolio studies.

Job description

Job responsibilities

All of the predictable and unpredictable DCC work of this post is annualised. In addition to the Critical Care on-call commitment, the successful applicants job plan will consist of a flexible number of clinical sessions per week for their allied specialty to an agreed annualised total.

The example shown below is for a 10 PA contract (8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA). The exact job plan will be agreed with the post-holder, Critical Care and allied specialty on appointment.

The on call rota is published for the entire year allowing flexibility with the allied specialty rota. Fixed non-clinical days may be negotiated with the base specialty department.

The Critical Care on-call commitment is based around four weeks in twelve (see figure below for 10PA contract example).

  • Week 1: four 8am-6pm day shifts (Monday to Thursday).
  • Weeks 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12: a combination of your Allied Specialty and daytime second on Consultant for Critical Care sessions (4-8 sessions per week depending on job plan).
  • Week 4: three alternate nights on-call (5pm-10pm resident then 10pm-8am on-call from home).
  • Week 8: three 8am-6pm day shifts (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
  • Week 10: four alternate nights on call (5pm-10pm resident, then 10pm-8am on-call).

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with license to practice
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine and Allied Specialty (if applicable)
  • FICM approved training in Intensive Care Medicine to Consultant level or equivalent training recognised by FICM recognised by FICM
  • FFICM or DICM or EDIC
  • Attended a Critical Care Ultrasound Course
  • Has excellent written and verbal English language skills
  • Has experience of both working well within a team and leading a team
  • Has completed several audit cycles and presented the results
  • Has participated in at least one quality improvement project
  • Has the ability to critically appraise published evidence
  • Has experience of teaching Foundation Year and Specialty Trainees to the standards required by the Royal Colleges
  • Regularly participates in a teaching programme
  • Has undertaken additional responsibilities in previous roles

Desirable

  • ALS, APLS and ATLS provider
  • Has a post-graduate teaching qualification
  • Has clinical effectiveness / audit related publication(s)
  • Critical Care Ultrasound qualification
  • Echocardiology qualification
  • Additional higher skills and training relevant to Critical Care Medicine or Allied Specialty
  • Has delivered oral/poster presentation(s) at regional meetings
  • Has delivered oral/poster presentation(s) at national or international meeting(s)
