  • Up to date ATLS, APLS, ALS

Main duties of the job

The post holder will undertake clinical and non-clinical duties in both the Adult and Paediatric Emergency Care Services. All consultants will assume responsibility both singly and corporately for the management of junior medical staff. They are also expected to concern themselves with the professional development, both clinical and personal of their trainees. Consultants must be aware of Trust polices & targets and provide a role model in achieving these corporate objectives.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • Primary Clinical Care: Undertake direct clinical care of undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Departments.
  • Team Leader: Act as Team leader co-ordinating the acute resuscitation or patients presenting to the resuscitation room with major trauma, cardiac arrest and major medical emergencies.
  • Area Lead: Manage clinical areas of the department over-seeing the management of all patients in that area and supporting the medical and nursing team members working in that area.
  • Every Consultant will work in all areas of the department including RAFTing, Resus, Majors, Paediatric Majors, EDU/SDEC, REACH, and Virtual EDU.
  • Emergency Physician in Charge: Working in collaboration with the Nurse in charge to ensure the proper running of the Emergency Department, ensure high standards of clinical care, patient safety and patient experience are maintained throughout the department. Ensure patient care is delivered in line with National Key Performance Indicators for Emergency Care.
  • The night consultant resident at Queens Hospital will provide advice and guidance to the Senior Clinician in Charge at King George Hospital.
  • Remote Emergency Access Co-ordination Hub: Working with London Ambulance Service within the REACH to provide specialist support and guidance for patients care prior to arrival

Non-Clinical

  • The development of quality improvement schemes, risk management and clinical audit

Planning and delivering the provision of the service. This will include planning how work will be organised.

The recruitment of junior medical staff and such other staff as appropriate for the department.

The selection of equipment for the department, ensuring appropriate standards for its monitoring and maintenance.

Training of nursing, ancillary and junior medical staff.

This posts is part of a major Emergency Medicine nursing and medical workforce expansion aimed at achieving our goal of being an industry leader in the provision of Emergency Care.
