Job description

Job responsibilities

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department sits within the Emergency Group within Division Two. The Group is represented on the Divisional Management Board by the Clinical Director.

The Group is managed by the Clinical Director (Dr Ward) Matron and Group Manager. Group Meetings are held weekly which are attended by the above three, the senior medical staff (Consultants and Associate Specialists) and senior nursing staff.

The Group is responsible for its delivery of clinical care and its budget through the management of its staff and resources.

The catchment area includes Wolverhampton, South Staffordshire and East Shropshire and consequently it has a varied workload from urban and rural areas. It sees approximately 110,000 new patients a year of which 18% are children under 16 years of age and is a designated Major Trauma unit.

Our Emergency Department was opened in 2014 as part of the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at New Cross Hospital. It boasts its own CT/MRI/USS services purpose-built to facilitate the department and a co-located SDEC and AMU. We also have a co-located Urgent Care Centre.

The department itself sees around 500 patients per day across majors, minors, resus and paediatrics and SDEC.

Our dedicated Paediatric Emergency Department offers a 24-hour service and is attended by our Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultants. We have a dedicated paediatric emergency department clinician rota staffed by a team of ACPs and doctors and a team of experienced nursing staff.

New Cross Hospital is a Trauma Unit offering Cardiothoracic and PCI services.

We are a friendly consultant body, currently 18 individuals on the adult rota and 6 on paediatrics. Joint roles can be supported such as research, education and simulation, intensive care, pre-hospital emergency medicine, paediatric emergency medicine, sports and exercise medicine, or specialist interests within paediatrics: these can be negotiated on successful appointment into post.

We currently hold a range of differing responsibilities including College Tutors and Training Programme Directors, a consultant with pre-hospital care expertise bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the department, and dual-trained consultants who work within Adult and Paediatric Emergency Care.

We are happy to consider applicants who are within 6 months of completion of CCT or CESR.

We are part of the Clinical Research Network West Midlands and Paediatric Research UK and Ireland (PERUKI), with strong links to Birmingham and Wolverhampton Universities. The trust is renowned as a teaching trust offering a nurturing and supportive environment to all its employees. We have a robust junior doctor and clinical fellow teaching programme, weekly in situ simulation session and access to a high-fidelity SIM ward for all areas of teaching.
