The neonatal unit is a "local neonatal unit" (previously level II) and is part of the NW London neonatal Network. The hospital has around 5,000 deliveries per year. There are 32 cot spaces of which 5 are funded for intensive care. The unit cares for all babies born at 27 weeks gestation and has around 1200 intensive care days per year. Nitric oxide, active cooling and cardiac echo are available on site.

The post is a supporting post .The appointee will join a team of three Consultants Neonatologists at the North West London Hospitals NHS Trust and the post is an appointment at Northwick Park Hospital. The candidate will be required to provide a comprehensive service covering all aspects of the specialty and will be expected to collaborate with the lead clinician in the management and development of the neonatal service. Previous experience in hospital management would be a benefit.

Main duties of the job

This post is a 0.9 WTE neonatal consultant post. The post will be set at 9 PAs. The post only provides neonatal cover. There is an entirely separate general Paediatric service on site at all levels. The post holder will provide neonatal care to a high standard.

Person Specification

Edcuation/Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • NLS trained within last 4 years
  • PALS / APLS certification
  • On GMC registered Medical
  • CCST in Paediatrics (or will be obtained within 6 months) or equivalent qualification

Desirable

  • Higher Degree MD, PhD or equivalent
  • NLS instructor status
  • CCT in Neonatal medicine

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Good all round medical, neonatal and paediatric knowledge
  • Good grounding in paediatrics and especially significant experience in neonatology
  • 1 - 2 years' experience (within past 5 years) in a level 3 neonatal unit or 1 -2 years of tertiary neonatal experience during HST (ST6-8)
  • Cranial Ultrasound skills
  • Understanding of NHS systems and audit processes

Desirable

  • Specialist skills in neonatology complementary to those already existing on NNU such as previous experience of consultant working (substantive or locum)
  • Echocardiography skills
  • Broad experience of working within the NHS
  • Formal training as Simulation facilitator
  • Have led and completed audits
  • Have evidence of service improvement projects
  • Previous experience within a hospital management role eg Speciality director, clinical director
  • Publications in Peer-reviewed journals

Skills, Abilities & Attributes

Essential

  • Are able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements

Desirable

  • Multi-lingual
  • Previous formal training in team working or management training
