10PA's plus an additional 2PA's- Permanent post

As a consultant in Emergency Medicine, you will join a highly experienced, multicultural team and benefit from a competitive package which includes admin/SPA.

You will also be able to work the bulk of your SPA time flexibly, by agreement with the Clinical Director and Service Manager. The department is led by a highly motivated group of consultants who are committed to providing high level care with a drive to develop the service further.

Our department is one of the busiest in the North West. We are near the end of building our brand new ED department. The state-of-the-art new build, designed with a large 10 bedded resuscitation room, Urgent Care area, Paediatric Emergency Department, integrated Radiology Hub including plain film and 1 CT scanner.

Main duties of the job

  • The post-holder be expected to work with other members of the Emergency Medicine Team to provide first class clinical care in Emergency Medicine. The successful candidate will see patients personally and will provide clinical leadership, and supervision/teaching of junior medical and nursing staff.
  • The post holder will be expected to take an appropriate share in the management and administrative workload of the Department. All Consultants are involved in planning and developing the service.
  • The department actively encourages the development of specialist interests within the Emergency Medicine field.
  • Participate in the development of the Emergency Medicine service treatment protocols and guidelines
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
  • Participate in the on-call rota on an equal basis with consultant colleagues to ensure that appropriate Emergency services are provided out of normal working hours.
  • Take an appropriate share of responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty, to include appraisal.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive Emergency Medicine service to Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care.
  2. Responsible for the care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to, & training of your staff.
  3. Provision of an out of hours service with your Consultant colleagues including on-call rota commitments, as indicated in the enclosed job plan.
  4. Provision of cover for your Consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave.
  5. Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & continuing medical education activity locally, regionally & nationally as appropriate.
  6. Participate in & co-ordinate clinical audit under local arrangements in accordance with the Trust Clinical Governance Framework & Trust obligations.
  7. Responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust.
  8. Responsible for maintaining awareness of professional guidelines & acting in accordance with them.
  9. Responsible for implementing the Infection Control Policies as determined by Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.
  10. Participate in managerial functions as & when necessary as part of a MDT.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Will be required to maintain full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT
  • Advanced Life Support (Adult & Paediatric) as well as Advanced Trauma Life Support Provider

Desirable

  • Instructor in ALS or ATLS
  • Other tertiary qualifications
  • Medical degree, MRCP (UK) or equivalent/ surgical FRCS or equivalent

Experience/Training

Essential

  • Appropriate postgraduate experience, including higher medical training and relevant experience at Specialist registrar level (or equivalent).
  • Recent experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Major incident management training
  • Research and Audit

Desirable

  • Broad professional experience
  • Paediatric experience

Knowledge

Essential

  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Knowledge and application of up to date evidence based practice

Desirable

  • IT Skills
  • Breadth of experience within and outside speciality

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Experience in leading the multi-disciplinary management of Accident & Emergency patients
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
