Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Practice Nurse / Nurse Manager at Fallodon Way Medical Centre to join our experienced and dedicated nursing team. The team consists of 2 Practice Nurses, 2 Assistant Practitioners and 3 HCAs.

Main duties of the job

As Lead Nurse you will focus on your clinical duties and be responsible for the line management of the team and infection control. Admin duties will include some aspects of QoF, appointment book structure and co-ordination of seasonal clinics. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates competent in diabetes care.

We are a friendly, successful, training and research practice of over 11,500 patients, located in Henleaze, which is a leafy inner suburb of Bristol, with good schools and amenities. We have a relatively high elderly population but also a good mix with families. We encourage and support ongoing professional development.

The practice combines the best of traditional and innovative working, currently with 5 Partners and 4 Associate GPs. The practice is both proactive and reactive about managing the ever-changing workload in General Practice, offering a supportive environment and good work-life balance.

The practice is supported by ANPs, a Pharmacy team including two Practice Pharmacists, an Award-winning Care Coordination team, a Social Prescriber, First Contact Physio and Mental Health Practitioner. There is a team of workflow administrators assisting the clinical team in managing inbound correspondence and results.

Job responsibilities

JOB TITLE: LEAD PRACTICE NURSE

REPORTS TO: THE NOMINATED PARTNER (Clinically)

THE PRACTICE MANAGER (Administratively)

HOURS: 25 - 30 hrs per week

Job Summary:

To lead the nursing department in meeting practice objectives, by maintaining clinical nursing standards and supervising / developing staff to their full potential. To provide a nursing service, focussed on LTC care, to the practice population.

Roles/Specific tasks

A) Clinical

Provision of nursing care within agreed competencies, which is likely to include:

Long Term Conditions care (to meet QoF targets)

Cytology

Wound care

Travel Clinic

Vacs and Imms, including Baby clinic

Family planning

Research

B) Managerial

Supervise staff to maintain required professional standards

Supervise staff to adhere to FW internal protocols

To assist practice in developing nursing staff to meet their own potential and fulfil practice objectives.

Maintain nursing procedures, ensuring staff comprehend requirements and adhere to agreed protocol.

Act as Infection Control Lead, advising and training colleagues as needed.

Ensure other nursing staff undertake agreed duties, and that there are adequate staff present to meet the practice needs.

Undertake staff annual appraisals (alongside PM)

The Job holder will manage her own development and training to maintain her skills, including any mandatory aspects to training and/or qualifications needed. The job holder will undertake a sufficient number of procedures to maintain skill levels, eg phlebotomy, but may not normally undertake this type of procedures during standard daily duties.

Such other tasks as the Partners or Practice Manager may reasonably request.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse
  • LTC diplomas
  • A demonstrable commitment to professional development

Experience

Essential

  • Skills and experience to provide and lead practice nursing in general practice
  • Experience of operating within general practice
  • Able to consult with patients over the telephone

Desirable

  • Experienced man-manager / leader of MDTs

Knowledge/Skills

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Full understanding of QoF
  • Confident IT user
  • Ability to see and act on synergies in pursuit of efficiencies
  • Ability to keep oneself up to date
  • Knowledge of read-coding
