Job summary

The Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB Salaried Dental Service is currently looking to appoint a Band A Dental Officer for Community Dental Services (CDS). This is a 37.50 hour, permanent post, providing dental care in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg locality. The post will be based in Dewi Sant Hospital but the successful candidate will be required to work in clinics across all localities, and to carry out domiciliary visits. A full driving licence and access to a vehicle is, therefore, essential.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will take up this exciting opportunity with a dynamic team providing the full range of community dentistry as per the guidelines in WHC 021 2021, working alongside consultants, specialists, dentists and a dental therapist.

The post holder will be expected to treat a wide range of patients including treatment under conscious sedation, emergency access sessions and special care dentistry for all ages. The clinics are involved in the outreach training of final year undergraduate dental students and the clinical supervision of Year 2 dentists on the Dental Core Training schemes.

The CDS is one of the largest salaried services in the UK with over 80 staff providing a diverse range of treatment to a widely dispersed population within South Wales. Dental care is provided from 7 fixed clinics and the Dental Teaching Unit, to patients north of the M4. The Directorate serves the valley communities in the Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend areas.

The range of treatment provided includes sedation, special care dentistry, paediatrics, general anaesthesia, Access, bariatric care, and domiciliary visits. The CDS also runs the Welsh Government oral health improvement initiatives, Designed to Smile and Gwen am Byth, and epidemiology surveys in these areas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. To provide the full range of primary dental care for patients within agreed guidelines under the remit of a salaried dental service. The core CDS patients are a mix of children, and patients with special care needs, including adults. These include those who are anxious, have behavioural management problems, complex medical problems or learning and physical disabilities, including bariatric care.
  2. In addition to the fixed clinics, where inhalational conscious sedation is available, the postholder will be expected to provide dental care across all CDS clinics, also in a domiciliary setting and to work on the annual epidemiology surveys when required.
  3. To demonstrate and apply the principles of ethical behaviour relevant to dentistry, including honesty, confidentiality, personal and professional integrity and compliance with the standards for dental professionals laid down by the General Dental Council.
  4. To participate in the clinical supervision of first year Dental Core Trainees (DCT1s) and to assist in the Outreach training for final-year undergraduate dental students, hygienists and therapists.
  5. To provide emergency care for patients who are registered within the service during core hours.
  6. To provide emergency care for patients in support of the urgent dental care (Access) service as and when required, during core hours.
  7. To participate in the GA assessment and treatment lists, for both paediatric and special care dentistry. These GA theatre lists occasionally run on bank holidays and at weekends.
  8. To ensure that patients records are accurately, comprehensively and contemporaneously completed, both electronically and manually, following University Health Board (UHB) and Service policies.
  9. To familiarise and comply with UHB policies and procedures, particularly in relation to consent, health and safety, and cross-infection control.
  10. To attend and contribute to meetings as required
  11. To contribute to the collation and analysis of data reports
  12. To undertake any other duties, appropriate to the grade, as required by the Senior Dental Officer or Associate Clinical Director.
  13. To ensure that high standards of clinical care are maintained at all times through Continuing Professional Development.
  14. To maintain the strictest confidence in relation to patient information whether informally or formally recorded.
  15. To have an understanding of the dental officers responsibility in relation to Clinical Governance, participating in clinical audit and peer review.
  16. To participate in regular appraisal with their Line Manager in order to help identify training and development needs, as per GDC expectations.
  17. To initiate quality standards within the department and to participate in quality initiatives within the UHB.
  18. To use the ACORN toolkit to accurately record and communicate the risk and needs of patients.
  19. To deliver evidence-based prevention as per the Delivering Better Oral Health: An evidence-based toolkit, including the delivery of fluoride varnish, as per the Primary Dental Care contract criteria.
  20. To implement dental recall periods based on oral health risk and needs assessment and following NICE guidelines.
