Applications are invited for the post of a Locum Consultant Urological surgeon, for 12 months, based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. This is a full time post comprising 10 programmed activities and a 1:6 on-call commitment providing emergency care for adults and children above the age of 3.

The Department of Urology at Wrexham Maelor Hospital (The Alan de Bolla Wrexham Unit) is one of three DGH urology units in North Wales coming under the overall umbrella of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The three units (Wrexham, Rhyl & Bangor) run independently though with co-operation, particularly in relation to major urological cancer surgery and a centralised North Wales uro-oncology MDT.

The Alan de Bolla Wrexham Unit consists of Consultant Urologists with individual subspeciality interests: Prof. Iqbal Shergill (general urology, stones, endourology & BPH therapies), Mr Basharat Jameel (general urology and renal cancer), Mr Mohamed Yehia (general urology and stones/endourology) and Mr Chirag Patel (general urology, andrology, female urology & genito-urethral reconstruction).

This post is for a fixed term period.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for this Locum Consultant, 10 session post to join a well-established Urology team, and the post offers an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated person to work in a busy department to help further develop modern urological services and to deliver an increasing workload. It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute both to core urology and to take an active role in extending the current service provision in the department to cover the increasing workload. The provisional weekly timetable will include 2 operating sessions, 2 clinics, Admin session, One stop clinics, MDT, regular ward rounds, 2 SPA and 1 in 6 Consultant of The Week on call rota, with full support from Urology Registrar of The Week. Please note that the below job plan is for illustrative purposes only.

On-call and weekend on-call 1 in 6 (2.5 PA DCC).

All major specialities and sub-specialities are represented with the exception of cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and transplantation. Visiting consultants provide plastic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery and super specialist paediatrics.

Job responsibilities

There are several community hospitals within the catchment area and you may be required to attend some outpatient clinics there.

Excellent training facilities are available with an extensive library on site. The Maelor Hospital is a Cancer Unit with weekly regional Uro-Oncology MDTs based in Glan Clwyd Hospital. In addition, there is a weekly Stone and Endourology MDT, as well as combined Urology-Radiology-Nephrology (KUB Club) meeting and a monthly Regional Urology-Gynaecology MDT (Wrexham &Bangor.

Junior staff consists of x2 Urology Speciality Registrar (Usually ST5 and ST3 from Mersey Rotation), 4 Specialty Doctors, one CT2 trainee, two CT1 trainees, one FY2 doctor (all Welsh Deanery) and 3 Academic FY1 junior doctors. The timetable of the Speciality Registrar is adjusted to take account of individual training needs. The other junior trainees cooperate in the general surgical on call rota.

The Department of Urology has close ties with the Department of General Surgery, which consists of 8 general surgeons of who specialize in colorectal surgery, upper-GI surgery, breast surgery and vascular surgery. There are consultant gynaecologists, of whom few have a special interest in uro-gynaecology. There are strong links between urogynaecology and urology. Some core paediatric urology services are provided within the department (Mr Patel) - complemented by specialist paediatric urological services provided by a visiting consultant paediatric urologist from the Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool who attends monthly out-patient appointment clinics in the Paediatric Department. The hospital has a large renal dialysis unit carrying out both acute and chronic dialysis and ambulatory dialysis. This is run by 4 consultant nephrologists.
