Job summary

We would like to welcome you to the older adult service. What better way to start you career in mental health nursing than by having the support of a multidisciplinary team to increase your skills and confidence as band 5 staff nurse. You will be offered a career conversation about plans for your career development and next steps once competencies are met before gaining promotion to band 6, which could include both inpatient and community opportunities within our older adult mental health service.

We offer training in psychological interventions and within New Haven Unit there are two wards, a bespoke home treatment team and community team to enable good flow and a seamless journey from inpatients to community. We offer flexible working arrangements and are described as kind and caring by the staff that work here.

Your preceptorship will include gradual learning and leadership opportunities, a dedicated mentor and coaching.

Main duties of the job

  • Close working with all members of the Multi-disciplinary Team
  • Undertaking mental health needs assessments
  • Assessment and Management of risk
  • Liaising with other services such as, community mental health team, Hospital at Home Team, Mental Health Liaison Team, and the Acute Trust
  • Effective assessment through SBAR and care planning
  • Delegation and shift management
  • Supervising of junior staff, including students
  • Leadership and management skills
  • Knowledge of operational procedures as well as clinical
  • An enthusiastic, motivated and innovative thinker to become part of the Older Adult inpatient service
  • The ability to work autonomously
  • The ability to problem solve, delegate, lead, co-ordinate and manage time effectively
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills along with a flexible, responsive approach.
  • Ensuring safer staffing levels are maintained for the wards
  • Reviewing incidents (Ulysses) and provide appropriate and constructive feedback to staff.
  • Participate in clinical and managerial audits
  • Provide management supervision
  • Ability to manage and support staff during difficult situations and escalate to ward manager/ service lead as appropriate.
  • To investigate complaints when delegated.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the Clinical leadership and shift management
  • When required, undertake the duties of Clinical Co-ordinator.
  • Provide strong clinical leadership for all staff, maintaining and enhancing own knowledge by making use of educational opportunities, under the guidance of the Ward Manager. This includes appropriate extensions to the role of the nurse/OT in line with NMC/HCPC and Trust policy.
  • Regularly manage a span of duty.
  • Provide Line Management Supervision and clinical guidance to junior staff.
  • In the absence of the Ward Manager lead a team of clinical staff who will deliver a high quality service to the users accessing the service.
  • In the absence of the Ward Manager and out-of-hours participate in the first level on call rota and accept responsibility for the coordination of designated clinical areas within the Trust.
  • Deputise for the ward manager in their absence.
  • Participate in Staff Development and Review Process.

Qualifications

Essential

  • RN Mental Health, RN (Adult) or RNLD
  • Registered on the NMC register
