Job summary

The advertised post is for a locum consultant post. The post is for ten PA's per week, of which it is anticipated seven will be for direct clinical care and three for supporting professional activity (SPA). Additional DCC sessions may be available by separate discussion and the job planning process. DCC sessions will be to provide emergency on call cover and anaesthesia for elective theatre lists.

The on call requirement for the post is to join the single tier consultant on call (currently 1 in 21). At present the single tier consultant on-call requires the consultant to cover emergency theatres, ITU and obstetrics. All consultants also share additional daytime weekend cover on a 1 in 15 basis to provide greater consultant presence during weekend days. There are 3 resident trainees / specialty doctors covering ITU, theatres and obstetrics.

All consultant anaesthetists are expected to be competent to anaesthetise children down to one year old and to be able to help critically ill children younger than this while awaiting retrieval to a tertiary centre.

Main duties of the job

You would be expected to contribute to clinical and educational activities within the directorate as determined by the consultant on your team and provide a high quality service to the local population including an emergency on-call commitment.

The current expected on call Rota is 1:21 from 2000 to 0800. You would be resident until 11 pm then non-resident on call after this time. You will be required to cover for your colleagues' periods of leave. This rota is currently under review.

There will be hot weeks, currently 1:16 which requires day time weekday and weekend working. Each shift is 12.5 hours and is resident from 0800 to 2030. The working pattern of this is negotiable.

To assist with nominated consultants in the supervision and teaching of junior trainees.

To contribute, to local clinical governance activities including clinical audit and clinical risk initiatives.

You will be required to co-operate with local management in the efficient running of services and expected to share with all colleagues in the medical contribution to management.

Subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service you will be expected to observe policies and procedures of the Health Board, drawn up in consultation with the profession where they involve clinical matters.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with license to practice and up to date appraisal / revalidation.
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Postgraduate training in anaesthesia to CCT level (or non -UK equivalent)
  • ALS

Desirable

  • Experience as a consultant in the UK
  • ATLS

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • General and regional anaesthesia for a range of surgical specialities to all age groups above 1 year old

Desirable

  • Obstetric anaesthesia
  • Regional anaesthesia for upper limb surgeries
  • Competent to transfer patients for specialist care
