We have an exciting part-time vacancy ( 30 hours per week) to cover Maternity Leave for 12 months in both Paediatric Special Needs (Early Years only) and Adult Learning Disability ( 18 + years) .

The Milton Keynes Speech and Language Therapy service is well established both within an integrated, multidisciplinary Social Care ALD Team and within the Children's Community Services team at the Child Development Centre. You will be part of a team of Therapists and Associate Practitioners with excellent clinical administrative support.

Post- Graduate dysphagia experience is desirable for this post but not essential.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include the following and must be completed independently:

Within the Early Years CDC team:

  • Comprehensive assessment of the child's needs and skills whilst taking a personalised approach to support that considers the parents' aspirations.
  • Assessment of the needs of the parents/carers and their aspirations for their child.
  • Planning and carrying out evidence-based interventions with and for children and parents in settings
  • Alongside the team, participating in maintaining and developing excellence in clinical practice within relevant areas of the service.

Within the ALD Team

  • Assessment, treatment and management of service users' speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) associated with Learning Disability in a range of settings.
  • Provide person-centred episodes of care that promote independence and quality of life.
  • Assessment, treatment and management of dysphagia in service users with a learning disability ( desirable only).

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Assessment skills for SLCN in Adult LD
  • Work within the principles of empowerment and personalised care
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to relate and interact with Service Users and their carers with ease, be able to overcome communication barriers and display sensitivity to social, cultural and economic issues, taking the wider needs of the Service User and family into account
  • Evidence of highly developed time management, organisational skills and ability to work under pressure

Desirable

  • Assessment skills for SLCN in paediatric special needs
  • Paediatric/adult dysphagia skills
  • Understanding of the code of practice in relation to EHC plan contributions

Qualification

Essential

  • HCPC Registered
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification ( or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Degree level 2:1 or above

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • independent practitioner in both ALD and CDC

Desirable

  • Dysphagia trained
  • Knowledge and skill in providing evidence - based interventions for ALD and paediatric special needs
