Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Hand Therapy team as a Band 7 Clinical Specialist to support the development of the Hand Therapy service at UHCW NHS Trust. Applications are welcome from Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists able to demonstrate substantial experience working within a Hand Therapy team. The role will entail working at both our main site in University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire in Coventry and our other site at The Hospital of St Cross in Rugby.

The post holder will work clinically with our Band 8 Advanced Practitioners, the Team Leader and two other Band 7 Clinical Specialists within our hand service. We provide highly specialist advice, assessment and treatment to support the management of patients with both traumatic and elective hand and wrist conditions, therefore the post requires a high level of knowledge in the management these patients. The demonstration of expertise in clinical assessment and treatment, and evidence of autonomous decision making are essential. Successful completion of a B.A.H.T. course or other relevant hand therapy training would be desirable.

Main duties of the job

Your clinical caseload will be predominantly in Outpatients and will include patients referred from plastic surgery and trauma&orthopaedics, there will be a small component of in-patient plastic surgery hand patients and Rheumatology out-patients. You will need to demonstrate experience in these clinical areas. You will need to be able to evidence that you are able to work under pressure to ensure patients are seen a timely way using either agreed protocols of treatment and/or clinical reasoning to ensure successful outcomes for the patients. Splinting skills, both static and dynamic, are essential.

The role would also provide the opportunity to work alongside our Upper Limb ESPs to develop services and pathways. The successful candidate would therefore demonstrate strong leadership skills, excellent organisational skills and a flexible approach to service delivery to support our ESPs and team leads on the delivery of these Hand therapy care pathways.

Your development needs will be identified through regular supervision and appraisals and supported through external/ internal courses, in-service training and case reviews.

Job responsibilities

  1. Your role will also support the team leader in the managerial and operational running of the team and service development in this area. This will include supervision of staff, completion of annual PDRs, sickness monitoring, team audit programme and supervision of students on placement. Previous experience in research would be helpful and the role will involve leading or supporting the implementation of current and future research projects alongside team members.
  2. To plan, co-ordinate, deliver, evaluate and manage a high quality therapy service to patients attending for Hand Therapy at UHCW NHS trust on a day to day basis.
  3. To ensure the service is efficient and evidenced based.
  4. To provide a source of highly expert specialised knowledge in Hands.
  5. Provide a highly specialist, high standard therapy service, assessing and advising on patients care & treatment, as an autonomous practitioner within the defined patient group.
  6. Be a clinical lead for therapy staff across the service area providing clinical advice and training, and liaising with other appropriate Therapy leads to ensure an integrated service is provided for the service area.
  7. Provide support and advice for the continuous development, co-ordination and evaluation of the hand pathway (therapy and trust pathways)
  8. Provide a source of expert clinical opinion within the field of hands for therapy staff and other health care professionals both internal and external to the Trust.
  9. Provide knowledge and expertise on the Therapy assessment and management of hand patients.
