An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 Orthoptist to join our team of 8 WTE Orthoptists and 4 Orthoptic Assistants .
Newly qualified Orthoptists are welcomed to apply.
The role will involve diagnosis and management of a varied caseload of adult and paediatric patients including patients from the Emergency Eye clinic, Neurology, Maxillo-Facial team, Stroke team and Paediatrics.
You will regularly be working alongside two Paediatric Ophthalmologists.
CPD is actively promoted with participation expected in departmental audits, journal clubs and Orthoptic staff meetings.
This role will be based at Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.
A degree/diploma in Orthoptics and HCPC registration is essential for this role.
Main duties of the job
Knowledge Skills and Experience
To determine clinical diagnosis and develop effective specialist treatment plans.
To participate in secondary orthoptic vision screening programme.
To assist in the teaching of orthoptic undergraduates
Undertake audit and research and development.
Clinical
As an autonomous practitioner be professionally responsible and accountable for the management of new and review patients referred to the orthoptic service.
To assist in secondary orthoptic screening programme and identify children requiring onward referral.
Asses, diagnose and treat children and adults with behavioural disorders and or hearing impairment including adults who may be illiterate. These patients include children with significant sight defects and patients where the first language is not English; considerable empathy and communication skills will be required.
To carry out pre and post operative assessments for patients undergoing strabismus surgery ; assisting with post operative alignment using adjustable suture technique when appropriate.
To advise and liaise with ophthalmologists regarding appropriate timing and or type of muscle surgery.
To be able to respond to changing needs and development within the service.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post ; Welsh and English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
