Job summary

This is an exciting time to join the Pathology team in Dorset. We are currently making great progress with our vision to create a first class integrated pathology service for Dorset.

The 'One Dorset Pathology' service encompasses site at Dorset County Hospital, Poole Hospital and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals which will provide clinicians, patients, and carers with a consistent and high standard of service across the area and maximise efficiency in the use of resources.

Staff will be able to develop to their full potential and substantial investment has been agreed, offering opportunities for service development and state-of-the-art modernisation.

We are looking for an experienced and motivated HCPC registered Senior Biomedical Scientist in Biochemistry to join our friendly Blood Sciences and Transfusion team at Dorset County Hospital.

The successful applicant will have extensive technical and theoretical knowledge in biochemistry at specialist level. Applications from candidates who are currently enrolled on a suitable MSc Biomedical Science programme will be considered.

The department has IBMS training approval, UKAS ISO15189:2012 accreditation and encourages professional development.

Main duties of the job

Management of day-to-day activities within biochemistry ensuring appropriate prioritisation of work.

Management of staff

Maintenance of appropriate standards of work to meet ISO15189:2022

Troubleshooting of equipment

To train, motivate and develop staff.

The applicant must be able to prioritise and organise their own workload and possess excellent communication skills when working with colleagues and service users.

To assist in the development of rotas in conjunction with the other senior biomedical staff and ensure that they are operated correctly, and to liaise with the other senior BMS staff to provide continuous cover from the start of each day.

To co-ordinate adequate supplies of laboratory consumables and reagents and co-ordinate their stock control.

To contribute to audit activities.

To contribute to the maintenance and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

The successful applicant will be expected to be able to work out of hours on occasions.

The laboratories are approved for HCPC training and are accredited to ISO15189:2012.

Person Specification

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential

  • oMaster's Degree in Biomedical Science, specialising in Clinical Biochemistry (or working towards)
  • oBSc (Hons) BMS or equivalent
  • oHCPC Registered BMS
  • oDocumented evidence of ongoing CPD

Desirable

  • oWilling to pursue further qualifications

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • oExtensive Clinical Biochemistry experience (minimum of 3 years post HCPC registration) as a Specialist working in a UKAS accredited laboratory.
  • oGood working knowledge of laboratory information and management systems
  • oDemonstrable skills of problem solving
  • oDetailed knowledge of standard IT applications and software e.g. word processing and spreadsheets
  • oGood working knowledge of working out of core hours.

Desirable

  • oExperience of analyser install and validation processes, including associated IT systems

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Essential

  • oDetailed knowledge of theoretical and practical laboratory procedures within Biochemistry.
  • oComprehensive understanding of quality control/ quality assurance procedures.
  • oAble to provide and receive complex information and to provide advice and training to other members of the team.
  • oAble to work under pressure; prioritise and allocate work within tight deadlines.
  • oAbility to lead, influence and motivate.
  • oFlexible approach to working that responds to the needs of the service.
  • oExperience of clinical governance, audit, risk, and root cause analysis including a basic understanding of statistical tools and methods

Desirable

  • oUnderstanding of basic management practice.
  • oUnderstanding of working in a Blood Sciences or multi-disciplinary laboratory.
